im hoping somebody can figure this out I was coming home from the dentist this morning and my car died on me on the interstate. The rpm's went really low so i thought maybe i slipped it into neutral, not the case. I then tried to speed up, nothing. It wouldnt even rev up. It then backfired though. So i pulled over on the shoulder, popped my hood but everything looked fine. No bad smells or nothing strange. Now the car will not turn over to start either. I turn my lights on and they work. Does anybody know what this could be?

Its trying to turn over. When i turn the key it makes a noise like it wants to start but cant. Car has 130xxx miles i recently just replaced head gasket on it. Yes i adjusted the valves the right way. (Turning the crank by hand) only mods are cai and headers routine maintenance always done.

Just a couple of questions.....yes or no will be fine.
1) When you turn the key, do you hear a clicking sound...or even 1 click?
2) Does the alternator go round and round when the key is turned to the start position?
3) When the key is rotated to the start position, does the engine make a click, a whirr or does the crankshaft turn?
From your first post it sounds like the engine just died. When you stopped along side of the road was the engine dead?
4) With the headlights ON, when you try to start the car.....do the headlights dim?
These questions, although seemingly simple, will help everyone figure this out.

funny story:
I had a 96 TA, one day it had a sputter and after that I had to crank it for like 15 seconds to start it... after several attempts to fix it and doing everything BUT the opti, It eventually died in my driveway so I just replaced the opti... well, it ran perfectly after that. I drove it for a week or so and when I was going to pick up my son it sputtered again and I pulled into his moms driveway and that was it.. it would run for a second and die so I thought Opti again... Well, I called my brother to come help me tow it 7 miles to my house and he got in it to turn on the flashers and get it ready to pull when he noticed the gas gauge being empty... Just for ***** and giggles he siphoned some out of his truck and put it in mine.. son of a bitch fired right up... I had a funky gauge and didnt know I was that low on gas... Just goes to show you, check the most obvious first... even if you look like a dumbass... haha

Half a tank of gas in it. I was driving down the interstate staright cruising at 70 mph when my rpm's dropped below 500 i ride with my hand on my gear selector so i thought it slipped into neutral. It didnt. So i gave it gas to speed up and it did nothing. Didnt even rev. So i got off into the shoulder turned my car off popped the hood and i seen nothing wrong i checked the oil it was full and still had a nice color to it. So i turned my lights on and they were nice and bright. So i tried starting it again and it would just try to start but to me IMO it sounds like it does not have spark to fire up. But i guess it could be possible that my gas gauge broke at the 1/2 mark.
