Default Good Clutch???? What Kind????

I need a new clutch for my 95 Formula. I went to Speedink and they told me to go with a Star LT1 Carbon Fiber clutch. They said its a Stage 3 clutch. $499 is the price of it so I'm thinking of picking it up.

What do you guys think of that clutch? What else do you guys recommend? I drive hard so i'm not trying to replace my clutchs every 4 months like my Mustang.

Haven't heard too much on the Star clutches. I'd stay away from the Spec as too many people in the LT1 world seem to have problems with them. Personally, I like the McLeod single disc setup. I had one, and it help up to over 100 dragstrip runs and about 24K miles on the street.

I drive my Spec III every day. Going on 15K miles and it still grabs real good. No problems.

You're one of the few then. I really haven't heard anything good about a Spec clutch for an LT1 in a while now.

I have a Spec stage 3 clutch in my car now. I put 2800 miles on it and a spring broke out of the hub. Spec warrentied it and sent me a new disc for free. I put about 5 miles on it since I got the new disc.

Before this setup I bought just 2 stage 3 discs from Spec and both discs had springs break out of them. So total I have had 3 discs that had springs break out of them.

I'm getting a twin disc next.

Solid95z, what kind of material was your clutch. Because i know when i looked into them becuase i was going to buy it, i noticed you could have ceramic or carbon surface. Would that even make a differance in your case?

I have the 6 puck carbon facing that they offer. The clutch holds bad *** but the hub springs are the only thing I have had problems with. I will say that the clutch chattered REAL BAD for about 800 miles and did not quit chattering completely until about 1700. After that it was a sweeeeeet clutch, till the hub spring broke.

When my car gets the clutch it will still only have minor mods, intake, headers, catback, control arms, wheels and tires. But by the end of summer i plan on doing heads and cam.

So would this clutch be worth my money or should i start looking at other brands?

It's a good clutch for your setup and should be fine. It will definately support the power and you definately wont need anything more than that.

So what clutch to go with??? I'm about to go try and put a King Cobra in off a Mustang.

I guess then it will be between the Mcleod or a Zo6 clutch. Most likely I'll get a Mcleod, unless I find a really good deal on a Zo6 clutch.

I don't believe you can put a ZO6 clutch into an LT1 car.

The problem with the Centerforce Dual Friction clutch is that the material that the facing is made of expands when it get hot. Meaning when you go to the track and do a burn out and then race it's a PITA to shift gears cause the clutch won't completely enguage or dis-enguage.

I vote McLeod. I LOVE mine. It is solid and has a nice feel. It also has a strong pressure plate, so it is ALOT harder for other people to drive... hehe. Its a REAL mans clutch.

I got a SPEC Stage II i still need to install. I'm doing heads/cam in the winter and with the advancements in LTx head/cam combos, I hope it will hold up.
