Default SBC 355 swap

Hey guys... been hunting around the forums for some simple information about the swap im getting myself into.

I am dropping a gen 1 355 into my 99 firebird, which has a stock LT1 k member. Ive heard multiple things about motor mount issues. I dont see myself buying a tubular K from BMR just to mount this thing considering im going to be under 400 horse. Ive heard you can use LT1 mounts but only two bolts will fit, ive also heard of the 'torque plate' method, which.. call my stupid but i cannot find any product in the range of a conversion torque plate..

Can anyone tell me the most cost effective yet heavy duty way to do this? Would really appreciate it..

Thanks!

A 99 Firebird should have a stock 'LS1' k-member, as LT1's ended in 1996, unless you are retrofitting one from a 93-96 car? The LT1 does use different mounts than a standard SBC as well.

LT1 Fbodies 93 to 97 lol The motor mounts from an LT1 are needed because of the drivers side The pass side is pretty much the same mount as any sbc If it were me & I had a 99 It would get a 6.0 truck motor OR a 400 sbc Theres NO substitute for Cubic Inches If your bird is a V6 car I would slow down & save a lil more money & get everything out of a wrecked 6.0 truck then stroke that bitch to a 427 a nice set up thats street friendly will net atleast 650hp with that combo & get decent gas milage for cruisin around town Dont be scared of fuel injection or the electronics The guys on this site will help you build a car capable of smokin vettes & vipers FWIW a sbc thats stock is 250hp an LT1 is 285ish & a 6.0 is 350hp

^ What he said. Why go through all the trouble of a motor swap for less than 400hp? LS>LT1>gen 1 SB. Find a LS truck motor, stick a cam in it and be done with it for a lot less than you think. Is this a street car?

Oh, yea a "less than 400HP" gen 1 is going more than likely to get toasted by a bolt on only stock LS car, they are underrated by 50 hp or so....just saying....what's the point again?

The car came with a retro fitted lt1 k. It was initially going to be an lt1 car obviously but i decided on a gen 1 cause of other reasons. So about those mounts...lol

I didnt ******* post to get lectured on why i dnt want to drop an lsx motor in my car. I had a 350/350 sitting in my garage and i wanted a project. Im not here to share my opinions cause i dont give a damn about lsx motors atm. All i want to know is what motor mounts to use.

As far as I know, you should be able to use stock LT1 engine mounts on the Gen 1 small block. The LT1 and Gen1 have the same motor mount bolt pattern and I do not see any reason why it will not work.

Hmm, see i have heard rumor that on the driver side theres four boss's vs three and only 2the bolts fit. Could i just use the top portion of a gen 1 mount and the lower portion of the lt1 mount to delete that issue?

I just looked at a bare LT1 block and it has the standard three on the drivers side and it looks like there are four on the passenger side. The LT1 in my 85 Camaro uses standard SBC mounts and all three bolts line up fine. I do not however have a set of factory LT1 mounts in front of me to verify if they use four bolts to the block.

I think the one VERY most important thing that all these guys keep forgetting is that you can buy sbc complete engines and parts MUCH cheaper than 6.0 swaps or completely stock ls1's. Ya they have less hp but if you have a beater v6 fourth gen like I do then a sbc swap seems logical. Who cares about the cowl its better than scrapping the car.
