Default prob. one of the most asked questions

i bought a 95z28 roller then i bought a 96lt1 with 6 speed tranny with 22kmiles. the car had nothing under hood. it took 4 months and 2 weeks for a guy to install. well, it runs like crap. i have drove it less than .4mile. i put a new maf on it and it thought it helped . maybe just idled better for a few minutes. it skips, backfires , and doesnt have any power. i have figured out the best thing to do is have a REAL MECHANIC check it out. a friend of mine works at gm dealership and is bringing his scanner to check it just as soon as he has time. after all the reading i have done...sounds like optispark. if it is, i have found some cheap ones on ebay. what is the difference in 150$ vs. 450$. im having m.r.i. on my back thursday and dr. is saying prob surgery. i cant afford anything expensive as it is. what is a good price for opti and having it installed? if motor really has 22k miles should'nt waterpump and wires still be good as new? somebody tell me something good...im tired of bad news. is lt1 really worth it?. it is a really sharp car. inside and out.

Quote: the car had nothing under hood

The OBD2 knock sensors '96 are not compatible with a OBD1 pcm '95 ,they look alike.

It's real easy to put the plug wires on backassward on a LT1 car.

The engine is compatible, however, a 95 is an OBDI car, a 96 is an OBDII. Not all of the sensors are the same as stated above.

so you dont know what he put in? the 96 engine/harness can only be used with a 96 or 97 PCM. there are OBD2 to OBD1 conversions out there, but you need to find out exactly what parts he put in. im sure theres a part number on the PCm its self somewhere, i dont know where tho

i talked to a mechanic today. he is going to try to check it this week. he said that it seems like the guy that put the motor in ,screwed up some wiring. the mechanic is like most of you guys... talks way over my head. he works at a gm dealership. do most of you guys work at nasa? i just want it to run like it should, lesson learned. if you dont know what you are doing, buy something already running.

NASA lol nope just a lot of time reading technical forums aka shoebox's website tuner cats website, and getting taken for a ride once by a shitty mechanic that pissed me off. another word of advie buy the haynes manual and keep it in the crapper, youll remember more than you think and it explains things with pictures fairly well

All he needs to do is pull the PCM out and check the ID tag on it and find out if it's obd1 or obd 2 then he needs to check the knock sensor and see if it is an OBD 1 or OBD2. You have to have the correct knock sensor for what ever PCM you are running.
You can look at the wire harness that goes down to the starter and see if it had a wire that goes forward to the front of the timing cover to a pickup. If it has this it is an OD2 harness. If not It is OBD1. The PCM has a set of numbers on a sticker tag. those numbers can tell you what PCM is in it.

Although the mismatch on knock parts will screw with timing but not to the point of back fire. plug wires on bank two is a good to start

Default thank you guys

i am saving all the info. for my mechanic to look over. he is a good mechanic but its always good to have folks like you guys to remind him of this info. it really is amazing to read all the post from you guys. my last hotrod was a 1969 dodge dart gts. with a 340.i kept it for almost 15 years.i knew the old stuff on how to make the car go fast but.it was nothing like todays cars.i have always like muscle cars and fast cars of anykind . i am 55 now and way behind. i have always gone to dragstrips and talked to great mechanics. i have been to orlando to the world nats 5 times. until i found ls1 tech.i didnt know there was so much info on the internet. thanks guys

got start with the basics and work the problems. After you figure out what is in it then you can move on to trouble shooting and hopefully its something simple. Good luck with it.

Yeah, make sure you have the correct matching PCM, sensors and wiring harness.
Here's what happened to me, I bought a '97 Z/28-LT4 conversion, somebody changed the PCM for an OBD1 ECU, 7-8 codes were coming up and car ran terrible, I found a '97 PCM, hooked it up and only 2 codes came up, I've found a few other problems like vacuum leaks due to wrong intake gasket, wires touching exhaust pipes and loose nuts and bolts everywhere, but car runs good now and no codes are coming up anymore.

Good luck, just be patient and get people that know these cars working on it.
