Default Blown Head Gasket

Hello, I am new to this forum to start out with, but here is my question.

My father has a 96 camaro ss with a LT1. He recently blew his head gasket, and we have been looking into fixing it for some time(not enough money to juggle around with his 70 camaro 454 ). Can anyone help me with this information. Both my father an I are under the impression that you need to completely remove the engine or else you cannot get to the problem area, can anyone confirm or reject this statement? Also, is it true that you cannot remove the LT1 from the top, only through the bottom of the camaro, again can someone confirm this? Or if anyone has done their own head gasket repair and has a thread maybe just post a link please. Thank you all for your time

You can take the engine out from top or bottom, however the overwhelming consensus is it's far easier to drop the engine from the bottom.
There is absolutely no reason to remove the engine to take the cylinder heads off.

You do not have to remove the engine. Just start by taking the air filter off, valve covers, intake manifold, headers, all the accessory brackets, and finally the cylinder heads. Took my about a week and a half juggling this and work.

Personally with the proper tools it shouldn't take more than 2 working days to do head gaskets....usually depends on whether or not you have the heads surfaced. The only thing that makes it harder than the 70 is the lack of underhood space. It really isn't that hard if you have experience tearing into an engine.

Heads should always be checked whenever a gasket blows.
