Default Oil cooler option

Ok i have 2 water pumps, i wanted to clean one up maybe polish the housing for the meziere 55HD electric. My T/A has the oil cooler option and the spare pump does not...is the oil cooler that much of a good thing to have? Keep the oil cooler or get rid of it? Thanks

Lots of people choose to delete them to clean up the engine bay. I think the factory deleted them after 95 or so.

Yeah, they were not offered after 1995. They were not all that great and sometimes caused clogs if the engine was not well maintained. If you use synthetic oil, you need it even less.

Remove it. When i took mine out i noticed slightly better oil pressure and a tad better temps. I removed mine tho cuz it was leaky.

I do use synthetic oil, it would clean up the engine bay some what. The oil temp would generally be at the same temp as the coolant...is that the idea? So if i remove it the water temp would be lower and the oil would be a little thicker for better pressure yes? I guess i would have to change some hoses out...shbox do u know what i would have to change or delete? Thanks

You will need the oil cooler bypass hose (goes from the bottom driver side of the radiator to the bottom driver side of the water pump). You'll also need to remove the oil filter adapter, then remove the two studs that hold it in. Once you remove the two studs cut off the flat tops of them and you'll be good. It's been documented several times so just try a search.

This should be the adapter you need. If im wrong then it would be off by the part number. Mine looked like this. I think about 2ft of 5/16 radiator hose was all i needed to bridge the radiator to the water pump after taking the cooler off. Always get more hose then you need tho then trim it to size.

That adapter is already installed under the cooler. The nipple on the cooler that the oil filter screws onto is actually a large hollow bolt that attches the cooler to the filter adapter.

Thanks for the replies guys...is there any real performance increase by keeping it? I would think the GM engineers had something performance or longevity related when they came up with it right? Maybe? No? Lol

No performance increase/decrease. Whatever they engineered for the cooler in the early 90s was obviously deemed unnecessary by the mid 90s.
