Default Ignition Issues + Video

Having a blast with this car lately. Bad crank trigger pick-up, random RFI issues I never had last year causing the DFI to go crazy, and now some sort of new rev limiter at 6000 rpm. MSD tech is convinced it's RFI on the points wire feeding the 6A box, which is funny because that wiring was never touched while the motor was down. Also they seem to think i have cylinder head grounding issues (never a problem last year?) and need to run 317 grounding straps from the heads to the block to the battery to the frame to my left nut. I just think this 6A (old) box is junk and overwhelmed by the cylinder pressure and trying to light off the E85. I know Mike V dealt with these issues, but the same thought keeps coming to my mind... "This shouldn't be so ******* difficult, these MSD parts just seem awful finicky" Anyways... how's everyone's Mallory, Crane, or Accel stuff working? Seems like the Crane stuff is reliable from reading on other sites. Accel has a 7 series box for the DFI system that is affordable without the bells n whistles I already have in the DFI stuff. Just can't find anyone using it.

Well after shielding and isolating every wire under the hood, adding ground straps everywhere and seeing no change in my ignition problems, MSD wants the box and coil sent in together. will update with the findings!

dude you just gave me frickin chills reading this lol.........run a ground sheilded wire from your crank trigger pickup to the xfi or dfi or whatever pcm you are running and tell me what happens after that lol..............peak ignition load is at peak torque as you know.....my peak torque is 6100......guess where my car started misfiring?? 6100........2500 dollars later i ran a shielded wire to my crank trigger and bam car ran fine.......i suggest doing that lol......i did the same thing coil, injectors, sensors, couldn't figure it out for the life of me......called msd they said the same ohhh send back ur dizzy crank trigger and box and we will test it all.......nobody could figure it out......decided one day id had enough i bought 40 gallons of 116 and drove the car to work for a week data logging every second and i found this one day by pure luck as i was zooming in on random spots in the data log........

and that issue has never showed up again after the wire swap.......keep in mind what you are looking at there took place over 175ms and was NOT easy to find......it wasn't visable on the data log unless you zoomed wayyyy in

fyi heres what it looked like out my exhaust as i was homing in on solving the problem....

Yea I've gotten rid of any random spikes (like the tach jump) when I shielded the points wire. However the break-up is still there. I can only log 20 frames/sec but all the spikes that were easily visible before are gone. the break-up feels different now. more like completely dropping all cylinders as opposed to random firing events from false triggering. All signal wires are wrapped with 20ga wire that's grounded to the dfi harness shielding on one end, and separate chassis grounds on the other

no dyno yet... but converter hit at 5700 with IVC at 47° ABDC and LT4 intake. This new setup with the HSR and IVC at 62° ABDC flashes the converter to 5800 so its making some cylinder pressure where it breaks up. MSD says close the gap to .018"...doesn't give me much confidence about the power of a 6 series ignition

bump bump bump...

After swapping coils, ignition boxes, remaking ALL ignition related wiring with everything shielded the issue was never resolved. MSD believes it is the crank pickup and/or some bad magnets in the trigger wheel. New crank trigger parts on the way, as well as a new helmet to hit the track next friday. Looking for sub 7s in the 1/8 first time out, DA probably in the 3500 range. Will post track results in new thread.

Sucks you had to throw so much money at it, hopefully the new crank trigger helps.

Damn bro, sorry to hear about the issues, wiring and EMI can be a pain at times. My car loves the E85, lit with all MSD components, MSD Opti, Digital 6AL,and the big blue Blaster coil, no issues here. Hope you get it fixed and get the times your looking for.
