Default Are iron filings on drain plug a bad sign?

Had to change the oil. Was black and smelled like fuel. There was a noticable amount of iron filings at the tip of the magnetic Moroso drain plug.

I'm hoping by using Penzoil Ultra 5w-20 instead of 5w-30 I didn't kill the bearings. I put 5w-30 in it today. The engine only has ~1000 miles on it.

It wasn't a big clump of filings, it was just noticable. Are there any warning signs to be had here? Thanx

Pretty normal on a magnetic plug.

Not sure why you would be using 20 weight oil though...

The debris on the mag plug was probably junk left over from machining. It's very hard to get it all out. Run it a some more and check it again.

New motors especially that had alot of machining done have small filings and somtimes shot hidden in the cracks and crannies all over, one of the reasons I clean the block over and over when I get it back.
If the oil is saturated with fuel you may have a tuning issue or a possible leaky injector. Does the oil seem thinned by the fuel or is it just a gas odor to it?

This is good to know. I used 20 because I made a mistake. The temperature was in the teens and I got the #'s mixed up.

Just a fuel smell. Not much machine work was done. All stock parts were re used and balanced. The only machining done was the bores were rehoned.

don't worry about it, has been the norm for all the fresh first oil changes i've seen...
