lt1 block diffrences
Sorry for the newbie question but are the lt1 blocks different than say the 350 tbi blocks of the same years? Or is it that the differences are into the intake/heads and wp setup?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Yep the blocks are quite a bit different.
where the rotaing assembly is convered and the placement of the cam and MOST of the oiling it is identical, but the cooling passages at the deck, and the front where the water comes in and out of the waterpump are diffent. The timing cover is different as well, mainly to facilitate the drive off the cam gear for the waterpump.
But the back of the thing is basicly identical to a 1 peice rear main seal SBC.
Deck height is the same as well.

well all the internals are compatable, minus the timing set, keyways, and oil pump drive plug.
Now truthfully the oilpump drive is just a shortened distributor shaft that bolts down in the back of the lifter valley. but the lower half is the same as a SBC distributor, even used the oilpump drive shaft from a normal SBC.

If you don't use an LT1 block, you will have to contend with a rear mount distributor and may not even be able to use the fuel injection (because of lack of an opti), water pump and more (your LT1 heads won't work on the SBC block without water passage modification). It's not going to be a direct swap by any means. It will more or less be a conversion to an SBC. Save yourself the trouble and find an LT1 block.
