What is that silver metal box with wires under the dash between the steering column and the driver door?

ABS control module. The GM diagrams really don't show it in the correct location. From the diagram you'd think it was under the seats!

Also known as the BCM, or body control module. It's designed to keep you from shitting yourself.

I thought BCM was introduced in 96.

I just tore down a buddies dash and replaced the wiring with a Painless harness. Pulled out and ID'd every module - the BCM is on the driver side tucked up in the corner. It's a silver box with a pretty big connector (2x16).

There are several other modules under there, some located on the passenger side, some on the driver side. RAP, airbag, TDM, BCM, etc.

Alright, research shows that it should be the airbag control module and does have a black box function that records sensors, throttle position, braking force, etc., and shows it back for the 5 seconds before impact.

And I confirmed that they did not get BCMs until 96.

I am looking at my factory service manual (for my 95) and it distinctly shows a BCM, location, diagnosis, etc. Location description says "above driver side kick panel" and there's a pretty diagram that shows its exact location - precisely where the OP says it is.

The OP says it's SILVER, not BLACK. The BCM is silver.

I said it serves a black box function, not is a black box. Have you ever seen an airplane black box? They aren't black. They're bright fcking colors like orange and yellow to facilitate finding them. Yeah, that's right. Black boxes are fcking yellow.

It's the EBCM (Electronic Brake Control Module) not BCM (Body Control Module) that on the left side of the dash.

The BCM is on the right.

Both are silver, IIRC.
