yes 400rwhp is very doable for 5k i have a 97 ws6 and thats what it put to the wheels and i had everything done at a performance shop i had custom heads comp cam 58mm tb pacesetter headers plugs wires gasket kit for the heads ypipe port and polished the intake total i had about $4000 in parts and $1000 to install it. my next step is a dana 60 with a set of 4.11s. and yes i would upgrade the rearend the gm 10 bolts are junk mine has been fine but i dont launch hard or take it to the track

and i forgot to mention i had it tuned and they put 30# injectors in now this is without rebuilding the bottom end so yes u might be cheaper to find a nice lt1 o clist for cheap and start there. theres alot of them motors out there still in good shape to for cheap

I'll go ahead and say it....you probably cannot rebuild the engine, and get heads/cam/supporting mods (fuel, tuning, misc.) within a $5K budget. You may just want to go LS conversion and stick a cam in it and be done with it and still hit 400rwhp. Something to consider.

It is certainly nice to have the peace of mind of an all forged 355-383 shortblock when adding big HP with cam/heads but not at all necessary really.

Sorry, youtube doesn't work at my workplace...damn company firewall lol.
I agree on the getting a used motor, thats what I did, cost me $400. Just put an LE1 kit on it with supporting mods, youll be close to 400rwhp, more like 380-390 with the 226/232 cam, which is plenty for what you are trying to do, and you would have a couple grand left over for all necessary supporting mods.

You talking about a $11K LS 427? Quite a big step budget wise....might as well spend a little more and get a ZR1 spec LS9; their only a little more coin at $28,000 Sounds like the OP is looking for low budget hp.

heres a different idea, not nessicarly better than others but i've seen it done. s/c it with meth injecion. if you go smallish (powerdyne) with the supercharger it will be about 3k and meth injection kits are a few hundred. that leaves you with 1500ish for supporting mods. just an idea to think about, theres a lt1 camaro near me with stock heads and internals running 8.5 lbs of boost meth injected putting out 520 at the wheels

I vote do this http://www.ellweinengines.com/Ellwei...Kit/355Kit.htm and then spray the **** out of it. Do some research on nitrous, its not as scary as you think. That rebuilt bottom end with 12:1 compression and basic boltons and a nice nitrous cam and stock heads (for now) with a 100 shot would be a BLAST and give you around 360 to the wheels NA and 460 to the wheels with a 100 shot. Throw heads on it later and youve got at least 420rwhp NA and 520rwhp on spray.

I thought Karl got out of selling kits like that.
bufmatmusclepants how do you figure "at least 420rwhp" once he puts heads on, relatively few cars actually put up a number like that on a heads/cam 355 and then only a handful of them actually perform in a manner that supports the dyno claims and that is with NA cams and you are suggesting he use a "nice nitrous cam".
Just because someone does it you think any old pile of **** you throw together cheaper will match or exceed. Yes 420rwhp should be easily reproduced in a 355 LT1 but most of you **** away your budget on unnecessary parts and then "save" on the critical parts.

The OP is starting from a blown motor. So the guy saying boost a stock engine is way off the mark too. If you actually look around at results 500+rwhp from meth injection on a cammed stock longblock with 8.5psi is wildly unrealistic. Maybe someone did do it but that is not to say anyone else will reproduce that result.

Jack up the cost a bit more. Your transmissions aren't swappable from an LTX to an LSX.

I have 5 grand into mine and I'm sure ill hit 400. That's including a whole other donor car and rebuilding the engine. Longtubes, spec 2.5 clutch, 52 mm tb, 38 ibs inj, racetronix kit, le2 heads and custom spec cam, rebuilt motor with polished crank. Etc. It can be done the car I got the heads and cam from put down 411.
