car smoking
car smoking Okay I was driving the other day and started to smell something odd figured it was a car around me a couple minutes later smoke is coming out from around the steering wheel area. I pulled over lifted hood no smoke at all then looked in car and smoke had stopped. took lower dash piece out couldnt see anything melted or anything radio works turn signals lights climate control **** dash light gauges everything working any ideas of what it could be?
Youve got some sort of short, my old F150 would smoke from behind the dash every now and then when I turned on the headlights, and if I touched the metal piece for the light switch it would be burning hot. You need to replicate the problem again, with the lower dash piece out and try to quickly find the source before you really short something out and cause damage.

I'm gonna take the whole dash apart and try to find it I have sat in car turned everything on and of let it stay on etc. no smoke so my only option take **** apart and find a melted or grounded wire.

if the smoke was electrical, it will have a kind of bitter smell....it would almost burn your nose.
there's a couple wires on the ignition switch that pass enough current that if the connection is a tiny bit loose, it could cause the connector to burn, and even heat the wire enough to melt the insulation a bit.
also, there could be a wire rubbed through in the steering column area, causing it.
