Default Worth it to port heads while doing gaskets?

After a couple set backs with working on my car, I've got the heads off now and am about to have a friend check them at his machine shop. Right now I just plan on getting the car up and running, but since the heads are off now would it be okay to get them ported? Or would I need a good tune if I did that? I do plan on getting a cc305 in the near future so I know I'll need a tune for that of course but I wasnt sure about just ported heads

Worth it? Only in professional lt1 experienced hands,So.. Yes. But even more so with Springs and a power tune .. Ditch that hypertech .. I can believe you put it in your sig ...

I would rethink the 305 cam.

If you have them local $300 "ported" now they will be pretty much unsuitable for cores for proper porting later.

Gains are likely to be minimal if atall with stock cam.

Well when I made the signature I didn't know they were worthless. I just got into the camaro world..and it came with the car when I bought it. So why not? And that's true. I may wait. But what would you recommend besides the cc305? It'll be a daily driven car so I don't want anything so aggressive that it wouldn't be healthy for everyday use.

I mean I know a custom grind cam would be best paired with some heads from AI or LE but that isn't in my price range right now. I just figured a 305 wouldn't be aggressive as a 306 and would be a lot better than stock for me right now

scroll through summit and check them out. stock cam specs are 206/214 I THINK. If not thats pretty close. So just go from there and see which one suits you best. Id rercommend something around 226/230

good luck!

Thanks! Well I just looked through summit and the cams they have under Advertised Duration go from 207/196 to 236/246 and all the way up to 346/346 but nothing between those first two. Should I be looking in the Duration at 050 inch lift catagory?

I used a ton of Edge converters in big heavy trucks and never had one fail.

No nitrous. The motor has 184,000 on it lol I was going to rebuild the bottom end but for now I'm just doing head gaskets to get the car on the road. And if I need to I can just save up for a stall so I'm not realy concerned with what one will cost. I'll be able to afford one eventually.

If it was me I would just get a good 3 or 5 angle valve job with new springs and valve seals. You will notice more power with out really messing up your castings for future work.

Wait till you rebuild the whole engine, just get it running for now.

I agree... if you plan to go back into it all later with that kind of mileage I would just fix exactly whats broken for now.
