Default 12 Second DD

Hey Everybody,
I have just purchased a 1995 Z28 M6 with 196xxxKm. It has a K&N CAI, Magnaflow cats, Flowmaster muffler and a Hurst Short Throw Shifter. The car runs good and pulls hard.

My question to all of you is what mods I should be looking into to bring it down into the 12's without ruining the MPG and daily driveabilty of it? I am a noob to the LT1 and am open to all suggestions. Thanks alot.

First thing I'd do is take it to the track and get a baseline. If you're decent at rowing through the gears you could be in the mid-13s as it sits.

But a good place to start is your exhaust. Ditch the muffler, add a full catback system or a cutout and then a set of long tube headers. Add 4.10s and you'll have a good chance at cracking into the 12s.

Delete the cat, too, if you don't have to deal with emissions bullshit.

OP, take ramair's advice. You could be in the 12's easy. Look into a tire also, grab a set of mt's and put them on a set of salad shooters. Once you get the launch down, you should be cutting some good 60ft times.

How badly will the 4.10s affect the MPG? I am still in school so i wanna know how badly thats gonna drain the tank. Also is the magnaflow catback any good? maybe pair that with some kooks LTs?

You have a .50 OD so 4.10s aren't going to meaningfully hurt mileage. You will however actually be able to use 6th without lugging at reasonable speeds.

Even on my car with the A4 and 4.10s MPG is just a few down from what I get with a stock wagon, nearly double the power, 3800 stall and 4.10s compared to 2.93s. I get high teens out of it be it rural commute to work or a highway trip to the track and racing all day. I haven't checked "highway" mileage without the racing but obviously if anything racing on a tank is going to drop the number.

Fuel injection is a wonderful thing.

If you see someone complain of massive mileage loss from gears it is likely a tuning issue there is a factory setting that makes the car run rich at sustained higher rpms to keep the cats cool. That needs to be addressed depending on if your gear/tire/cruise speed will have you over that threshold.

I lost 1 mph around town with 4.10s from stock 3.42s. Don't know about strictly highway mpg but I suspect it wouldn't be much.

Only thing to worry about with 4.10s is that first is essentially useless.

4.10s will be great for you with a 6speed. Magnaflow is a great catback, IMO one of the best. Straight through flow and mean as hell under throttle, yet mellow-ish at idle. If you can get the Kooks, then do it. But seeing as you said your on a school budget and worried about gas; I wouldnt spend 800 or so on headers. Just go with some cheapy pacesetters or find some ebay ones.

A tune is required for a gear change unless you want your speedo way off. I would would do full bolts ons then get a mail order tune...only $100 or so.

Gears , headers, lca and dr

Catbacks are really the sound you like. Also taking the front sway bar off ,spare tire and jack out when at the track.

Stout clutch, sticky tires and 3.73's or 4.10's will put you deep in the 12's with your current mods. 100 shot would put you in the low 12's.

Most of my driving is around town anyways so that sounds good. So Exhaust, Gears and a tune should put into 12's with some good tires? Would any suspension mods be a good idea?

Suspension is always a good idea.

Wheel hop kills 10bolts, and LCAs/relos will help a lot. If you are pulling to one side on launch a thicker rear sway bar will help, and an adjustable torque arm will help keep the back tires planted.

On a budget, I would start with just the LCAs and relocation brackets.

Ive read that the 10 bolt isnt the strongest rear end out there, at what power level would you expect it to give out?

Usually it's traction that kills the 10-bolt, not horsepower. Now and then you'll hear of someone breaking the 10-bolt on the street but the vast majority of failures happen because of hooking at the strip along with severe wheel-hop.

Autos are much more gentle on 10-bolts than 6-speeds so you're at a bit of a disadvantage there.

OP, while some guys do get a 12 sec run from DRs, gears and tune, it takes a good amount of skill to do it with the minimum of mods. I've only been able to get 13.4 @108. Personally I'd love to get a 12 but I'm careful of the 10 bolt.

Good Luck and have a good time but don't worry about a number too much.
