Default LT4 Starter Randomly spins?

Put in a brand new GM LT4 starter in, two times it spun out of 50 starts and didn't engage, every single time after that it immediate started perfect on the next try. Thought it was odd, but it wasn't like you could get it to duplicate it since it would always start perfect the next time and the times after. Well drove it the other day, starts perfect. I am happy I am driving this car again and it's running great. Get in it to leave the grocery store, starter spins. O.k, try again, spins again. Long story short we were able to pop the clutch and make it start. After that car starts perfect every single time. I started it over and over again, not a single issue. Starts strong on the first try and sounds great with no abnormal noises, no grinds, no clunks, nothing. I am thinking maybe the drive gear stuck on the starter? Just really weird it would do it randomly like that.

Is the starter motor terminal possibly touching one of the other two 12v+ terminals (purple and/or battery)?

Possible starter solonoid issue? Looks like u may need to put it in the air and look at it while someone else turns the key.

Joe,

Would have to check this weekend when I get under there but I will look. Are you running a starter heat shielf on your car? With the stepped headers, I wonder if it would be a worth while investment.

Fad2blk,

We are going to try and get it on the lift to double check every thing.

Since this the car has started perfect 10-15 times, first try starts right up, sounds strong, no strange noises. Got the car in the air, power and trigger wire connections were on tight, no evidence of touching. The mounting bolts were on very tight, so no evidence of play. Got it off the car, teeth look fine. Going to take it to a alternator-starter re-builder that was recommended by a friend who own a performance shop, I think they have sent some starters to them on a couple classic cars. We'll see what they say. Maybe they'll see some thing when they get it apart.

Casing looked fine, as did the teeth that I could see. This place from what I saw seems to mainly do industrial and heavy equipment but they had a lot of car stuff as well. He said it's rare but does happen. Over the years on this single car, I think I have had just about every possible problem you can have with a starter.

Did you take the inspection cover off and spin the engine by hand to look at the flywheel teeth?

I have the plate off so I can check this weekend. When it had the LT1 F-body starter I had no issues like this in 4 years that starter was on this car. Only thing changed was we put the LT4 starter on. I can still spin the motor over and see whats up though.
