Default Stock LT1 Abuse

Hey guys.

New to this forum just sold my 5.0 Foxbody for a 94 Z. How much abuse can an LT1 take with 152k miles on her? Bone stock and I have a heavy foot on a daily basis. Been hitting the rev-limiter a few times so far. Not too crazy just when I feel like I need a rush. Changed all the fluids and It has a new acdelco radiator just installed.

It'll keep taking abuse, just as long as you keep up the maintenance and oil changes.

BTW, welcome to the forum. I have a 89 foxbody (notchback) 5.0L fun car to drive.

As long as you don't mess with the rev limiter with the springs that are on there and change the oil faithfully you'll be fine.

I've had my car for 4.5 years and 25K miles. (Its at 112K now) I have been pretty hard on the old girl, not trashing it but I race A LOT and I'm just a fast driver and the car has taken it well. The rearend is the weakest point on these cars but the rest if properly maintained can take it just fine.

Only two times Ive heard a whine from a rear was one that died the next week and one that had gears installed and shimmed too tight.

I beat the **** out of my car almost daily, though I do keep up on fluid changes.

Had to have my tranny rebuilt and ran through 3 ring & pinions in 6 years.

130K and the motor still runs very strong somehow.

these cars are built well to handle daily abuse, while stock. start making big power and you will be finding the weakest link. GM built these cars very well to handle their power.

I wouldn't go so far as to say they are built to handle the power. They were built on an already dated platform from the parts bin. I mean back in the day they were alright for what they cost, but not so much anymore. I would have easily paid a few thousand more if GM would have designed, outsourced, installed a stronger differential instead of the pathetically weak S-10 diff they received from the factory. The one component that I really salute to handle big power is the Borg Warner T-56. Best factory offered transmission ever.

Depends on what kind of noise it is. If it's an actual whine then the gears are probably a bit out of whack, but nothing to be too concerned about unless it is very loud and/or a grind type of noise. The other kind of noise could be a howl which could mean the bearings are frozen and spinning in the races which can lead to catastrophic failure.

Most racers actually prefer the oil to be hot since it flows easier reducing drag on the ring gear. And usually in everyday driving conditions the differential fluid doesn't get hot enough to cause concern because it always has air flowing over it.

GM 10 bolt rears are glass, unfortunately.
