My Dad remembers the "glory days" and still thinks a 283 is the best smallblock ever. He hasn't driven my car as he lives 5hours away but he has been in it and is surprises him not only the power but the fact I get better mileage with it than the half ton 5.3L trucks he and I both daily drive.
The old stuff was great in it's day and the memorable stuff was as said often leaded fuel and solid flat tappet. What would OEM stuff do these days if someone was say selling an E85 only(high octane) car with a solid roller.
Even the LS7 is set up for 91 octane since that is as high as many areas get.
