Default How much play...

I am installing a tranny in my 94 Camaro I mounted the the two surfaces and noticed I have about a half inch of play between the flexplate and the torque converter... Is that normal am I going to have a problem?

With the converter seated on the pump & the trans mated to the motor itll have about 1/2in of clearance Bolt it up & have fun Just be glad you seated the converter all the way & didnt break the pump from not bein properly seated!!!! Seen it happen a few times from Know It Alls LoL

The minimum clearance between the converter and flexplate is 1/8" and a maximum of 3/16". If the gap is more than 3/16", possible pump damage may occur. I would suggest using some washers for shims/spacers and aim for 1/8" clearance.

Only way Id use Shims or Washers would be if I used a mid plate instead of motor mounts!!! Ive never ever seen shims or washers from the factory!! If the clearance was an eye ballin 1/2 Just slide it up to the flexplate & install all the bolts. Youll be fine!

Well me next question was going to be should I get three 1/4" spacers from ace hardware they sell aluminum spacers pretty cheap... I used them to space out my accessories bracket and alternator to get clearance for the valve covers that I used!

Agreed.

Here's what I've always done:

Seat the converter fully into the transmission so it bottoms out on the pump. Then pull it out just enough to fit a 1/8" drill bit between the mounting flange and the flywheel. Whatever excess distance left over is the distance that needs to be shimmed.

The common spacing is 1/8" to 3/16" as mentioned, but I've always erred on the narrower side (1/8" without a problem).

I wouldn't use aluminum spacers. In fact, if I had that much gap, I would weld steel to the converter mounting pads. You don't want that stuff walking around. Use grade 8 hardware too.

I will eat some Humble Pie & say Im Wrong If its that far out it can wear out the bump bushing So set the clearance at 1/8
