Default bad fuel mileage

Hey guys I have a 94 T/A A4 and I get terrible mileage below 1/2 tank. I drive 2 miles and it takes 1/4 tank. I've read another post that says it could be the temperate sensor on the driver side below the head. It also said the icm but i dont have a code. I have gave it a tuneup and a brand new opti and exhaust. Any help? Thanks

Are you saying that your car gets good fuel mileage above 1/2 tank??

It gets around 18 on the highway above 1/2. Below 1/2 it gets around 8, maybe not even.
So yes.

That doesn't make any sense. Are you taking the total amount of miles driven divided by the total amount of fuel required to fill up?

Mine was doing this and it was the temp sensor. The one in the head just controls your temp gauge in your dash. The temp sensor in the water pump is the one you'll want to change. If you do this, be sure to not get any water on the opti, and make sure the car is cool, or the water will be hot when you take the sensor out.

the fuel gauge is not accurate so if you are going off of it, stop. Just take the total miles you drove, fill it up at the gas station and divide by the number of gallons it took to fill up. dont trust the fuel gauge

It sounds to me the gauge is not reading properly... Mine the gauge goes way past full and then when I get to 1/4 tank I am basically on Empty. What sucks for me is I don't have the low fuel light so I have actually run out a few times!

I second the gauge problem. Unless you have one helluva dent in the tank, which would cause the 1/2 to E problem cuz your tank wouldn't hold a true 16 gallons

When the gas gauge reads 1/2 full its actually 1/4 full. Ill fill mine all the way up and itll stay at full for more miles then it would when it reads 1/2 to empty.
