Charging one minute not charging the next
This has been an on going problem I've been putting off because I never drive my car. But the other day I was driving and step in the gas and the car down shifted and lost all power, but stayed running. Look down and see my voltage gauge nearing 8v.
So I baby it home and check the out the voltage with my meter. 14.4v. Great...let it sit and run and eventually goes back down to 12v and falls. Then with out any Change starts charging again at 14.3v
The voltage issue has caused me issues launching because the car wants to die then all the sudden voltage comes up and the car takes off.
I had the battery tested and it tested bad though too... And the alternator tested good. But I'm wondering if I can just replace the voltage regulator and brush set instead of buying a new $120 alternator? Does this sound like a voltage regulator problem?
I'm also going to throw a new battery in it for good measure.
Thanks for the input guys.

I'd replace what was tested bad (the battery) and see how it goes. No need in replacing anything else if you don't need to. Could be a cell shorting out in the battery.

Ya going to throw a battery in today and go from there. Just can't see the battery causing such a inconsistent output. But electrical drives me crazy lol

The little wire going to the alternator could be pinched that plugs in underneith the alternator. Just another possibility...could be getting good connection at times then loses at other times.

Thought of that. With the car running I tried pulling on that wire and moving it around and never saw a change. But it could be sitting still running in park and starts and stops charging.
