Yes. When you remove shim from the pinion bearing spacer it will only move the pinion away from the ring gear very slightly, if at all. Try it with the original shim stack under the pinion support from when the gears were quiet. I have been able to take gears that were set up wrong and pretty noisy and set them up and have them come out somewhat quiet, so I highly doubt you hurt them going only 10 miles.
