Hey guys my opti took a crap on me and i need a replacement one asap.

But i don't want to spend alot because i will be pulling the motor in a couple months anyways.

is there any aftermarket ones that are cheap and half decent?

Or does anyone have one lying around they don't need?

Go on ebay and look for chandler motorsports, they are probably the best seller of non gm opti's Theirs are about $140 I just bought one as my vent line came off my old opti and sucked in alot of wonderfull west texas dirt. Strangely it would set code 32 when cold, but when warmed up ran fine.

if you don't need a 92-early 94 spline drive, I have one out of a 95. It was installed about 7 years ago and run with a LTCC for about 6 months. It hasn't been used since. PM me if you're interested. I can ship it out on Friday since everything is closed tomorrow.

I put a cardone on mine from advance. Comes with a lifetime warranty and six months later it's still running great. If I remember it was only like $200.

How did the opti "fail".
Many LT1 owners seem to be too stupid to understand distributors need periodic cap and rotor replacement and then half of those who do realize that can't seem to do it competently or with decent parts.

A location and which version you need would help a lot when asking if anyone has one laying around.
If you were in northeast wisconsin and needed a vented setup I could hook you up.

Well it "Failed" because i had no choice but to drive through about a 10 inch puddle of water while leaving work. And right after i did that the car started having serious hesitations while accelerating. and wont idle for ****.

i checked just about everything else and it seems like the only thing it could be is the opti.

Also its for a 95 camaro so i need a vented opti. Sorry i should have put that in the original post.

Dry it out. EVERY distributor acts up if they get water inside them.

Also if the opti did get full of water it was not assembled well.

Well it has been sitting for over two weeks. i have started the car every other day just in hopes it will dry out but no luck.

Also its the stock unite and its got 115k on it so it might just be time to replace it. But i dont want to spent a ton on one because im about to pull the motor in febuary.

If anyone has any other ideas i'm listening.

if you don't know if or when the cap and rotor were replaced then replacing those would certainly be warranted. With it left to sit long term wet it is possible you might have allowed corrosion to form and taken out the opti that way.

The old "top mounted" distributors would gravity drain pretty well and dry out, but if I had been in your shoes I probably would have done something to forcibly dry the opti. The vented opti is fairly well sealed and just leaving it sit wont dry it well and even occasional starting really wont draw much fresh air through as it is a low volume system.

When you pull the motor what are you doing? Even an LTCC needs a functional opti base.

your right i should have pulled the opti and dried it out better. Just didn't have the time to do so and was hoping it would dry itself out.

I would rather try and get a good used opti then replace the cap and rotor. Just because the price would be about the same

When i pull the motor i will be swapping out for a gen 1 sbc and most likely going with the F.A.S.T. EZ-efi setup. But i do need to get the car back up and running until then

I just replaced a GM unit that was bad out of the box. Cap and rotor were in mint condition. Got a new one and it fired right up. Sometimes they just go bad

Just take yours out, competely disassemble it and clean everything out. Mine was crapping out on the #5 cylinder big time! I took out my opti and found that there was corrosion inside and green corrosion as well from random arcing on the cap. I cleaned it up and the darn engine just rips now! It runs better then it ever has!

The PO let the car sit with the big hole in the hood for 2 years before I was given the car!
