Default 4l60e tranny help!!!

Alright guys I need help... Got a "600+hp rated" trans that I installed 3 yrs ago with about 200 miles on it now.. Trans worked great until recently it won't shift out of what seems to be 2nd... Could be first cause won't go over 35 just revs like in neutral .. I have a 3600 yank stall if that makes a difference... Any ideas? Fluid seems fine it has been filled with tci performance fluid since install

Did you choose the tranny builder the same way you chose the rest of your build?
Telling us who it is might help us tell you if it is worth trying to fix or if you should just suck it up, learn your lesson and move on.

There are a lot of bad builders out there and a lot of them put their effort into marketing rather than a quality product and from what I see that is just the sort of builder that would catch your eye.

Since you said it just free revs when it tries to shift I think that means a hardpart is broken. Electrical faults and failures can cause lack of shifting but I am fairly sure that it just stays in a gear doesn't shift and freewheel.

I made the mistake of using a tranny builder several states away that seems to be fly by night and cant be found now ...which is why I am in this situation to begin with... and what is wrong with the rest of my build? I am leaning toward fried 3/4 clutch packs because if i manually shift into the D or OD still no go...with the xmas season here definitely will be doing plenty of research and tearing into this badboy myself. Thanks for those trying to help.

Honestly if you want to keep the 60e, find a local builder that has a good reputation. The guy that did mine here, did a good job on short notice for a good price.

When shopping for a builder you need specific examples of them building the 4L60E well. It needs to be setup careful with clearances checked not just dumping a pile of parts into the case like is easily done with other trannies.

It does NOT need a bunch of fancy parts, people like to believe the 4-pinion planetary was some big deal but the 4-pinion were forged and NOT a problem area and the 5-pinion are powdered metal meaning CHEAPER TO MAKE than forged. They work just fine and if you need a planetary set fine but realistically a good condition 4-pinion planetary is just fine, there were some issues in the 80s but that predates these cars.

Kevlar is pretty much a bad word for a street/strip build.
"Blocked accumulation" is a huge red flag.
If they say anything about "upgrading to the Vette" servo another flag as it was stock on all LT1 vehicles.

I got the bmr th400 cross member, new driveshaft, converter, shifter. Mine is mainly a track car now with minimal street use tho. If you got the coin a 4l80 is that way to go.

As much as 96 may be a PITA and brash at times he is correct in the advice he has given.

I have been through all the popular names that sell transmissions on different sites. Most do put in all the parts they say they are....but the parts are not always top notch parts. Anyone can dump parts in a case and tell you how easy it is. Very few can tell you how they all work

Sounds like the forward sprag is out, do you know if they installed a double cage 29 element sprag? If they reused the stocker its probably broke.

I just got done building and installing a 4L60E into a 93 Z71. Just drove it about an hour ago. Its got a lot of goodies in it...

If the sprag is out 90% of the time you will have to put it in D to get it to move and it will actually shift up through all the gears. BUT it will not take off in OD.

Sounds like he lost the 3/4 pack

Those guys got great stuff ... I talked to them when I was going to go the TKO500 route but their not budget friendly

I think I'm going to try to tackle this myself by tearing it down and seeing if those clutches are toast and if it's got the parts the builder claimed it was supposed to have..thanks for all the advise and insight guys hope to see ya all at a shoot out or on the road hopefully with my car in one piece and running ..
