Default Very thin/contaminated oil?

A friend of mine bought a 97 Z28 M6 car with 89k on it. The car has sat for the last 2 years. Well he hasn't driven the car other than around the house since he hasn't tagged it. He bought a set of longtubes for it and when we pulled the valve covers we noticed the oil felt very thin and I would almost say smelled slightly of gas. Say it is fuel in the oil, what would have caused it? The car runs great doesn't smoke and sound fine. Not even a SES light. There wasn't any build up inside the heads at all but then again I suppose gas would do that. He was considering doing a cam swap and before we tear into it I wanted to make sure we got this problem fixed and all the storys of spun bearings doesn't make us feel any better about it.

Perhaps a dumb question, but was the oil changed and you are referring to fresh oil being contaminated?

No, the 2 year old oil. Is it possible an injector leaked slightly over time and then drained down by the rings? The oil level isn't over full or anything either. Just thin.

Change the oil, run to operating temp and then report results.
