I used TTS Datamaster which gives you 20 free scans, and I believe there are others as well.
There are other options out there but, this should give you something to start researching off of.

I guess ignorant is a bit of an overstatement. I'd stack my knowledge of OBDI operation up to anyone as far as usable knowledge, I just dont have the slightest clue about hardware to tune them with. I hold the personal belief that OBDII is superior in every area aside from price. Needless to say I have all OBDII vehicles and tune and play with those frequently.
As far as your knowledge being useless without an LT1, I beg to differ. Countless situations could arise where that particular skill set would be quite the asset.
