Default Cps codes

I have a 97 camaro z28/ss. I keep getting a code for the cps, I have replaced the cps and still get the code. I was told if the cps was bad that it wouldn't even start so I disconnected it all together and yet it still started no problem. Is that normal? It runs great, no misfire so I' don't know why I'm getting these codes. It has a remote start on it but its a M6 transmission which I know isn't common. I bought the car with it already on there now. My mechanic said that might effect it... I don't know if that effects it but just want to post everything. Any ideas???

You're referring to the Crankshaft Position Sensor? On 96/97 cars that sensor is purely used for misfire diagnosis. Have you checked the wiring harness to make sure it hasn't been burnt or pinched? Has the code been there since you bought the car or did it throw the code during your ownership. Also any mods done to the car that would require removing the timing cover or balancer (i.e balancer, timing chain replacement, camshaft, engine rebuild)

Ok that's what I told the mechanic it was strictly for misfire detection. I have not checked the wiring harness, and code has been there since purchase, I replaced the distributor. It has a msd distributor, and the motor has been rebuilt by the previous owner and has an lt4hotcam I was told, nothing big though, those cams don't do much.

Perhaps the previous owner did not put the CPS reluctor back in when doing the rebuild.
