Friend has a mustang in the 600hp range and 4.10s are too much. 1st and 2nd are nearly useless on the street

again 4.10s wont "suck gas" aerodynamics are the reason cars get worse mileage at higher speeds, engine rpm is a very small factor when talking modern OD transmissions especially this one with a .50 OD. But a person just has to be capable of basic comprehension to grasp that idea, guess that is why we have to keep saying it..........................

I still get 23 MPG with 4:10s and I hook just fine with drag radials on the street.... Just sayin'.

That's a mustang....with probably a T-45 5 speed and different gear ratios. In that case, 4.10s are worthless with those cars. My friends boosted 4V did nothing but fry the tires with 4.10s and a T-45. First was utterly useless.
The T-56 can handle 4.10s just fine and you should be able to hook just fine. I know I do.

I have a big cam and the stock 3.42s and my car is a m6 an taking in first is like taking off in 2nd gear the car hates hills and 6th gear at low speeds it needs some 4.10s but putting them in the 10 bolt is a time bomb.

I think 4.10s would help with the clutch also it kinda bucks and chatters.

My truck has 3.42 gears whatever height the stock 17" tires are for an 05 Sierra Z71 are certainly over 30" and gets solidly worse mileage than my car that has a couple hundred more HP, same trannyand 4.10s, but half the frontal area.

Just to update i went with the 4.10s and i love them they are perfect for the street. I can burn them from a coast into third gear..and it deff helped out the chatter in clutch and lugging in 6th.. i got the gears outta a late 90s s10 2.2 automatic i payed $22 bucks for them with all the shims, yoke and open diff..id say better then paying 180.00 for gears out of jegs.. i couldn't imagine aftermarket gears being any stronger because if there gonna break there gonna break lol

I'll say it over and over, RPM is not what kills gas mileage. Load on the engine is what kills gas mileage. I had 3.73 gears and jumped to 4.56's. Gas mileage stayed exactly the same. My theory as to why people see worse mileage after putting in gears is because they put their foot into it a whole lot more.

I could careless about gas mileage. If i wanted 25+ mpg i would get a rice burner i changed gears to have fun.

had the 4.10's and t 56 in my z the ratio is nice and fun to drive . I just bought a 12 bolt with 3.90's as I needed to bring a little rpm down in 4th at the strip . the 7.5 with the 4.10's is a grenade with the pin pulled . it is gonna blow sooner or later . lol I put a torsen diff . in it last summer and it has held up pretty well , but the auburn gear stuff sucks I blew the spiders out of 3 of those last summer . even the "pro" series blew in 4 th gear on me . any launch over 3 grand meant Kapooya !

You put an open diff in a Z28?! That's gotta be terrible when trying to do anything on the gas.

yeah for fuel economy its best to keep the engine purring along nicely, lugging it is worse.
I have a cruze ECO for a daily driver and on flat level highway ill use 6th gear all day (triple overdrive gearbox) but as soon as I hit a incline I gotta drop to 5th because, according to my scan gauge, my engine load spikes up over 80% but as soon as i put it in 5th it drops to around 40% depending on the hill and MPG's go up quite a bit.

as for the gears themselves I am interested in upgrading my 3.42's as well and 4.10 seems to be a win from what ive read, i drive in 5th alot on the highway just because i like the sound of the exhaust more lol

except for cornering, you dont want differential lock in a corner.

No no no.. I kept the locker in the z I just swapped the ring and pinion out for the 4.10s I was just stating I picked everything up for cheap.... Lmao I would never take a locker out for a one tire fire... How did this thread turn into fuel economy?? Ah well
