Default Need Ideas an opinions on headers and exhaust.

95 automatic LT1 trans am with ram air hood and a weak *** flow master exhaust.
I'm just a kid, 20yrs old. Don't know anything about mechanics but I'm learning ALOT just by reading threads. I'm currently deployed over seas and I want to take advantage of this time to build up a "what to buy" list. Basically, I want my car to not be slow. Compare to the other cars people bring at the near by track.
So far from what I've read is. Pacesetters long tube headers, and an exhaust of your choice, I was thinking the SLP LOUD MOUTH II. ( just cause I like the loudness)
I want something that's not cheap. Nor to expensive.
Just in the middle with good quality and gains. I'm thinking about 3-5 grand dropped on do it your self mods.
Any ideas on any set ups that's I could do my self no problem when I get back home?
Please feel free to mention any other mods that I could possibly add on.

Full exhaust is a good place to start. I like my pacesetters however if you plan on using their Y pipe you should look into putting a better merge on it. A good stall converter will net the most gains. and then a tune to top it all off. Then you have suspension and tires to make it hook.

Personally I love second hand exhaust. With most of my cars I've found my exhaust on wrecked cars that I could hear it before I bought it. I have Hookers Super Comps that go back to SLP Loudmouth 2's. I love the sound of it and it wakes the neighbors up every morning I leave the driveway. I think you'd prolly like the sound of it.

Sweet, sounds like I'm going the right direction! Thanks guys.
I've never even though about going to the yard. Great idea though, I'll be sure to look under the card next time.

Yeah, I found mine off some kid that ran a red and was parting out the car.. It could barely start and was smoking really bad, but gave me enough to be able to hear what it sounded like.

If you have that kind of money to spend, go ahead and get a 12bolt or equivalent rear end. Sounds like you will be doing some track racing anyway. Get the rear end out of the way and have a piece of mind if you want to smack it hard out of the hole.

Rearend
Adjustable rear suspension (LCAs and PHB)
LTs with an xpipe and bullet style mufflers (spiral flows sound good)

The next thing to upgrade is going to be the trans, upgrading the back of the car first and moving to the front is really the best way to go. A FMVB (forward manual valve body) TH350 with a good convertor is a blast to drive on the street.

With 3-5k to spend, all of the above is very doable.

Do some research and lighten that car up a bit. I learned how to mod my LT1 from this board...lots of good help and info on here.

I have Pacesetter long tubes with Pacesetter off road Y and magnaflow exhaust. I love the headers and Y, but if you want loud Do Not get the magnaflow. Unless you're like me, and put a 3" cut out in before the axle. That way I can have loud and quiet.

I agree with Stroked 96 Bowtie, that it is nice having piece of mind with a rear end and trans and stuff. But my theory is, keep money aside, beat the hell out of it, and when something breaks replace it with a performance part. Running 12's with the stock rear end, stock gears, and stock T 56. Although I did blow a clutch into a million pieces. But then replaced it with something much better.

Another tip. Weight reduction. Whatever you dont want or use rip out. I dont know how far you're willing to go but my 96 isnt a daily driver so I've lost front and rear bumper supports, washer bottle, ABS, cruise/traction control, AC/heat, power steering, gutted dash, even sun visors. I could go on forever but you get the idea.

BTW where are you deployed and what station are you from? I'm in Afghanistan, for another two weeks at least. Time to go home back to Ft Bliss.
