Okay, If I were to drop this cam into MY car, I'd definitely buy all the supporting mods necessary, as just about anyone would. However, my brother decided not to. He rebuilt his motor and installed this cam (I believe it's the 306... it has a .51" lift and a 290 duration) but never used any type of supporting mods. I was told by several people that it's extremely dangerous. However, he hasn't had any issues out of it. He hasn't gotten a tune for it yet so obviously his gas mileage sucks. But he has been using a lead foot quite a bit recently. He hits the gas after almost every turn (at least with me in the car) and it's still running fine. It's been a year and half so far. Any thoughts guys? I mean I seriously would do the mods... I'm just asking to know if his car sounds safe to you guys or if it WILL mess up eventually.

I just asked him. Everything he replaced was with stock parts except the cam.

 

I'd say valve springs would be the only thing really required; the stockers have to be totally maxed out with that cam. A tune, headers and a cold air intake would be on my list but obviously it runs okay without them.

 

The thing with putting in a cam without supporting mods is say the cam was capable of a 40rwhp gain properly supported. Without supporting mods he maybe gained 20 at peak and lost power elsewhere and has far worse driveability than it should. He probably thinks it is quick but that is just because he is too stupid to know any better.

 

Short answer: Yes.

He slowed his car down at the track. It probably has 15-20 more hp at the very top, but less everywhere else, and valve float before it peaks.

If the the springs are still stock and the PCM hasn't been tuned his limiter is still set somewhere around 5750, which is most likely the reason that **** hasn't blown up yet. Give it time, the springs will become weak enough a piston will kiss a valve. With no tune I really doubt anything has been gained except a huge amount of carbon buildup in the combustion chambers.

 

I've ridden in his car before and after the cam installation. It seems much faster than it was before.

 

You can probably attribute that to the rebuild depending on how bad the motor was.

 

With the cam only, it won't be for long.

 

How often does he drive it

 

Years ago I met a kid from one town over that had 4.10s and a custom high lift version of the Comp 306 in his untuned Z28 M6. At the time I had a ZZ4 cam, 2800 stall 3.42s tuned by pcmforless. Neither of us had headers both on street tires. He was all impressed with his till we lined up at the track and ran fender to fender................
His felt faster but wasn't. I helped him get a MadZ28 tune put in the thing. Never saw him at the track again though, last I saw him he seemed to be getting tired of the poor manners even with the tuning helping that. It was just too much cam.

I 100% agree, it probably sounds vicious, making you think it's fast, but I bet it won't be out of the 14s in the 1/4. With the proper supporting mods it could be a low 12 second car.
