Default Single or duals?

I honestly have not found any exhaust combo on youtube that has won me over.

I have always had cars with a dual exhaust with X/H. This LT1 motor makes a little different sound than my last pushrod LS1 motor in my 04 GTO.

I'm currently running L/T's, no cats, Borla CB. It's OK, it can sound a little "truckish" at certain RPM/load though.

Anyone have a side by side comparison of a dual exhaust vs a single exhaust on their car?

For reference, I LOOOVE a LS1/2 with L/T's no cats, H or X and a Corsa Sport catback. It's sex to my ears at WOT with how it screams. Fell in love with Corsa after this video:

I came from Mustangs and people love flowmaster...on the OHC mod motors I HATE flowmaster. Plus the associated drone, poor flow and rusting out. But I stumbled across this video and really liked the sound. Then read the comments....yup, flowmaster muffler LOL

I am usually a Magnaflow nutswinger, but the Magnaflow CB's on the LT1 fbodies does nothing for me...

Hooker Aerochamber has my vote for an LT1.

If the Borla isn't doing it for you then throw on some bullets w/dumps and call it a day.

It's not the fact of being loud, it's having a tone that I like.

I won't run dumps on a DD because the drone will kill me.

wrd1972, that's some nice work! You described it better than my "truckish" analogy when you said the "machine gun sound". That's what bugs me the most about the Borla. I didn't know if it's due to the fact it's Borla or that it's a single pipe system.

If you like the sound of the LS, then you'll probably prefer a single exhaust on an LT1, or at least a very good X-pipe.
Merging the two banks together turns that rasp from the uneven firing pulses on Gen1/Gen2's into more of a scream.
I noticed the same effect a long time ago changing from SLP shorty headers to Tri-Y's; it really smoothed the note out at mid and upper rpms.

"machine gun or truckish sound" comes from the single exhaust system design using AFTERMARKET piping. When the air pulses and sound waves from the two front pipes converge in the y-pipe, lets just say that freaky hard to explain **** happens that causes the ill sound due to a lack of critical and complicated engineering of the aftermarket converging pipe. Also straight through muffler cat-backs do it as well.

My Borla due to the straight through muffler did this around 2-2.5K RPM and sounded like crap and that prompted me to go true duals.

I ran a single exhaust on my 04 GTO with L/T's, catless and a single 3" Magnapack and never had that "machine gun sound".

Here is the system I built for the GTO with a Helmholtz resonator pipe.

Maybe it was the LS motor differences? I don't know.

IMO the closest sound you can get to a flowmaster is a Hooker Aerochamber. Anything without cats is going to have a little rasp to it though. If you go with the aerochamber make sure you buy the 14 inch one and not the 22 inch

Swap an ls1 in and you'll have your rasp back.

Mufflex sells their single in 4" and 3.5" pipe with a spintech muffler. I ran the 4" with a spintech muffler and thought it sounded awesome but had to change it up becuase of close neighbors. Mufflex also sells their single system with magnaflow or flowmaster mufflers.
I will return to 4" single once i find a high flow muffler thats not as loud as the spintech or magnaflow. So im looking for a muffler too but will return to single outlet. That 4" baloney sliced outlet is too cool.

Found a decent video for the Borla on the dyno both fully closed and fully open.

Aaaaand that's when the machine gun sound comes in when you open the passenger side tail pipe...no bueno.

I'm now contemplating using a Dynomax VT muffler 3" Center In Center Out. I had them on a previous car and they are GREAT for killing cabin drone at cruising speeds and open up at WOT.

LOL That's my car. I forgot about that video. I also forgot that the open Borla provided nearly zero power gain.

Yeah you can clearly hear the machine gun sound in the vid. That crap is 100% gone on my current exhaust system.

^ LOL. Well thanks for making the video!

I'm sill liking the 30 series Flowmaster that comes in the Mufflex systems but I'm not sure how the drone will be inside the car.

wrd1972..where are you from? I'm in Walton, KY...20min south of Cincy.

LT1 bolt ons, edelbrock shorties 3" to a dinky little Flowcrapper 10 race muffler. Personally I don't like it all the much but there is no drone and the volume level is perfect.

From 2500-3500 it sounds nice and deep, from there the pitch changes and she screams like a banshee. What I hate is all the rasp on deceleration.

*If you have speakers with bass, watch it on that. Lots of bass that headphones/ laptop speakers can't pick up.

^ that doesn't sound too bad. I know Flowmasters are notorious for droning in Mustangs. Where is your muffler located? Behind the axle? Any pics?

I have not heard or had a ride in a Flowmaster equipped Fbody.
