Timing way retarded
I randomly put a handheld scanner to my car to watch the data while driving. My question is, what could be causing me to have such low amounts of timing? At idle the car is at -40* and wot -5*. The car runs pretty hard with 205k but I've looked on my sierra to compare the two but it runs 26* to 58*. The car has a cam and the timing chain is on correctly. Like I said, the car runs fine just those numbers threw me off. Thanks for any insight.

While those numbers might be a little odd for idle and WOT, they can't be retard. It wouldn't even run with 40° of retard. I'm sure those are advance numbers. Different PCMs output the numbers differently and scanners display them differently.

I posted the same comments here, a while back. It was explained that ignition timing is expressed in reference to TDC, and "advanced timing" is expressed in degrees before zero, and in "computer speak", advance is expressed in a negative number.
FWIW, my car, when hooked up to a data reading scanner, shows about the same values.
