Default Will 1 Cat be enough to kill rasp?

LPP headers, ORY, with GMMG exhaust.

I know there is a rasp with this setup. I have 1 3" cat I ordered from advanced auto (see below)

http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/m...929/22317245-P

If I put this in the Y-pipe (after the 2 collector's meet), will that kill the rasp? or do I need more? Thanks!!!

I'm sure it will help but to what extent I have no clue. I put a Flowmaster merge into my ORY and that really helped with the rasp

I am doing a cat because NJ requires a "cat" down there. I figured 2 birds with 1 stone lol

The y-pipe itself will dictate the raspy sound more than a cat will. The LPP y-pipe design is not optimal for flow either.

Yeah if the ORY has crappy merge throw a good one on (they're cheap) along with the cat and that should really kill the rasp. Plus you'll pick up a few hp with the merge

I have heard mixed stories about that. Some say its fine and others say its trash.

Maybe when I am making some serious power I'll get another one. For now, it'll probably do haha.

Here's my set up with a Magnaflow Cat after the Y.

Here's the same set up without the Cat.

With the Cat on, the exhaust noise level in the cabin is definitely quieter and smoother. But outside the car I really can't tell a difference. Others might, but I don't.

I took my Cat off because it was too restrictive at high RPMs. My 3" exhaust is already a bit to small.

Not sure what the specifics are in your state, but most others a catalytic converter(s) is not to be moved from the stock location.

Back in the day I had LT's, ORY, GMMG with a single hi-flow cat in the I-pipe. I had it there just so I would pass PA visual inspection.

This was going back almost 10 years ago so I don't remember how much of a difference the cat made in reducing rasp but I do recall it helping.

This was the reason why I did NOT do headers till now (ive had the car for about 10 years)....

NJ used to have a full visual inspection (pop hood, sniffer test, etc)

Now, all they do for 96+ cars is see if the CEL is on, check for codes, and "look" for a cat under the car. They don't care where it is as long as its there. I've had friends in a local club pass with a hollowed out cat in a different spot and pass.

Pre OBDII you need to pass a sniffer test.

I have EGR/AIR deleted now, as they don't check under the hood, which is why I went with LPP

I wouldn't necessarily call the merge "junk" because it does function okay. It at least curves into the passenger pipe as opposed to some i've seen run straight in to it. The only thing it really causes is a raspy tone. With that said, I want to buy a magnaflow Y merge because my y-pipe is a junk exhaust shop setup that doesn't flow well and rasps like a ****.

well. fudge. I can't believe the Y is causing the rasp. gersh dangit. A magnaflow Y will bolt right up? A different Y will really make it sound better?

I can only find the magnaflow Y "merge pipe", not the whole Y

Oh yeah, forgot about that. They may have a limit on how many sensors show "not ready" when issuing the test. I'm not sure if that differs from state to state or if it's a Fed. mandate? I remember doing this for my car when I had to run through emissions and it failed because there were too many sensors in a "not ready" status.

It may not necessarily be the Y-pipe, but the merge of the Y. A member here named speeddmn24 or some mess like that used a Magnaflow merge and claims it eliminated the rasp:

Yeah because people could just clear the CEL then try to pass! lol .

Apparently the tune makes everything show "ready" (my rear O2s, egr, air are gone)

I see.

Yeah I see the threads popping up now...

Damnit. I should have just bought the headers.

Welp, I guess sell my Y somehow and get Mufflex to weld a y-pipe for me.

Also:

It is NOT the same Y-pipe as a pacesetter, it does look similar though

I think that mufflex y pipe that bolts up to the hooker headers is badass. Problem is I want to do pacesetter headers this winter because they have the least problems when bolting up. I wonder if that mufflex y pipe would work with pacesetters??? Seems like exhaust for these cars is a art not a science that is for sure.
