Default Optispark help!

Hi guy I started to have a misfire this week in my 1996 z28 and finally got a chance to look at it today. So I started by scanning the car no codes so I looked a misfire graph on the tech 2 and cylinder 5 was the suspect it had 500 misfire counts so I check the wire looked good. I changed them at the beginning of summer. Next I put my spark plug tester that has a certaint amount of resistance and tells you if you got good power to the cylinder. No spark from the tester put one of my old wires on the opti in cylinder 5 no spark. Then I tryed other cylinders and the work fine with the tester. So my thinking is it needs a cap and rotor sence it's just one cylinder. I be leave the optispark has never been changed and the car has 200,000 on it. So my question is am I right with it needing a cap. And with the mileage should I just change the whole thing. Are there any other test I should do. Thank you for the help.

If its the original opti then it for sure need cap and rotor. If its not pullin code then the optical sensor is still good. The cap and rotor is just like old school distributor. It need replace cause its a wear item.

It sounds like you can use a full tune up. Plugs, wires, cap & rotor.

It's easy to mix up the wires so tag both ends when you install them.

I just did plugs and wires less than a year ago but didn't touch the opti because the thought of it's not broke don't fix it. So you guy say just put a cap and rotor on it. Should I get own or msd there around the same price

Cap and rotor are tuneup items just like any other distributor.

Far as which, either OEM or MSD are fine.

Also what plugs did you go with when you changed them?

Thank for the input. I put the factory plug in it. Also I got it a part today and the cap was the problem. But I looks like the rotor was hitting the cap. The distributer shaft has some play so I think I got to Change the whole opti. The water pump doesn't feel the best ether so I guess that's getting changed to.

most auto part stores carry them...cheaper ones beware. I, and others, use the MSD kit which I got at Summit

Thanks a lot.

I'm getting a slight studder under constant load when the car gets warmer. No CEL. The diagnosis begins!
