Default 96 LT1 to 4l80e

So I had a thread about a 96 lt1 fbody previously, but the car got turned into a cube, new project time.

I've got a 96 LT1 with a T56. The trans is shot though, and most local rebuilders want a lot of money to get it back up to par. Buddy has a 4l80e though, and wants next to nothing for it (Because he collected five of them)

I know some BFH is required to the body to make it fit, custom converter, trans line extensions, etc. My issue is with the PCM. I can't find anyone that has gotten the 96 PCM to control the 4l80e and those who have, never explained how. Does anyone know the best method here? I'm also considering just finding a 4l60e because it should swap in a lot easier, even with the 96 PCM.

I'm open to any input and ideas, and hoping to make some progress. It's -25 degrees outside, so I'm stuck inside - the shop won't get warm enough, figured I'd try to hammer out all the details before I go at it.

I've done it but with the OBD1 PCM in my 95. You could convert to OBD1.

Well I just remembered I have an LT1 pcm, I believe 1995. (Serv. no. 16188051)

Would swapping that in, or is there a way to get that PCM to run the 4l80e? I recall reading the wire harness is interchangeable between the 1995 and 1996, that correct?

He's the guy to talk too. I gave up on my 80e swap. But I do have a new crossmemeber for what you are doing. Let me know if you are interested

full manual valve body or buy a trans controller. Its not hard to install the 4l80e in to the car just a little massage for the plug and other than that it bolts right in.

I'll let you know about that bar, shipping might be a pain.

Any recommendations on the controller? I've heard the Tci makes a full plug and play, not sure if its as easy as they sound, but it also has a nice price tag slapped on it.

It can be done with the stock PCM. There are a few codes to turn off and minor adjustments to the shift tables. It's really easy.

I've heard both sides of the story, some say its easy and simple, other says no deal, you need a stand alone. My main thing would be going from OBDII to OBDI, is there much hassle involved in doing that, or is it as easy as just popping in the 95 PCM.

I'm still looking for a moderately priced controller as well, just in case. Trying to cover all bases here.

Just search for the OBD2-1 conversion. It's been talked about to death. The whole thing is extremely easy. Get a hold of slow67, you can purchase a write-up for the wiring portion and the codes to turn off in the PCM. The tuning is just a matter of adjusting shift points to the new gears for the 4l80e. It's minor.

I went full manual valve body. I would contact PCMforless an talk to those guys. I bet they know what needs to be changed in the PCM. John at Speartech is very smart on this as well.

To the OP to switch to obd i all you do is plug in the pcm and change the knock sensor to match. Ive never made the changes to run the 80e in the pcm so not sure. I do know that the LS1 cars were running the 80e on the 60e tune using relays to change the logic on the one shift solenoid that is opposite here is a link http://www.tunedbyfrost.com/products_dev1.htm

Much appreciate all the responses folks.

Looks like I'll be sticking with the 95 PCM, since it can be tuned to run the lower RPM idle for the cam as well, and tuned to run the 4l80e trans, if all goes well it'll save me quite a lot of money in SA controllers.

I don't see why the obdII wouldn't run the 4l80e?

Nitrous2fast; I believe if using the 96 PCM (OBDII) it cannot be tuned, so a standalone controller is necessary to run the trans. I may be incorrect, but I've had a lot of reasons thrown at me, haha.

I do have one remaining question though, for everyone.
I've heard rumors you'll need a new driveshaft, because the stock one will be the incorrect length? I know the yoke has to be replaced, but can anyone confirm whether or not you'll need a longer drive shaft?

By any chance, does anyone know where I could get a 2800 stall converter for the trans? As well as a decent 32 spline yoke that will work.

I had contacted Jake's Performance, but not getting much of a response, unfortunately - they seem to have what I need.

FTI did my 80e converter for me. Works great.

I got my yoke from Summit
