Go to your local GM dealer with your VIN and proof of ownership and they can cut you a key. I've done it 3 times. That's if the locks have never been changed or you even have a dealer near by.

Definitely.

And... I hate to admit to this, but when I had my first car back in 93-94 (didn't have remote door lock actuators) I locked myself out a couple times at home and did this: I grabbed a piece of thin metal rod and bent a 90* at the end (about 1"). Wrap that end in duct tape so it won't scratch anything. I used my wallet (was always thin in those days) and pulled the top of the driver's window out just clear of the upper weatherstrip and wedged my wallet in there to give me about 3/8" room to slip the rod in and slide the lock button.

Its always good to have a second set of keys in case you ever lock yourself out of your car.

An unlock key is like $6... That's what it was the last time anyway.

Brick through the window! Just kidding. $6 sounds like it would be a worthwhile investment to get a key made.

Six dollars does seem quite cheap. Anymore at the dealership that may get you a cup of coffee. Reach around is extra.

I'm a retard and have locked my keys in my car numerous times, even at the track with the car running. All it takes is a metal coat hanger. You slip it through the window, hook the door handle, slide it back towards the back of the window to get leverage and not slip, then pull and viola. Even if it doesn't unlatch the door, when you pull the handle it unlocks the car, and you can open it from the outside handle.

I tried the coat hanger and was able to hook the handle but it wouldn't unlock. however i found success with a slim jim type bar i made. super easy. wish i would have done that before wasting $78 at the dealership. thanks all

You seriously paid $78 for a door key? Was it gold plated?

I hope you didn't get the door key confused with the ignition key.. $78 sounds pretty steep AND it didn't even work for you.. But atleast you finally got into the car with the slim Jim..

If you want to get a second set of keys cheap just buy a set of key blanks off ebay or somewhere for like $15 then take them somewhere with your keys to get cut. This is alot cheaper than buying keys from the dealership. You would need to measure the resistance for the ignition key before ordering a new one.

The unlock key SHOULD NOT be anywhere near $78. Did you buy the ignition key? Thats about the price of those since it has the chip on it. I know for a fact the last time I had my dealer cut me an unlock key it was less than $10. Wish I could find the receipt.

Even an ignition key shouldn't run that much, unless they jacked up the price in recent years. I paid $25 for them to cut me a new one.
