Default water pump shaft seal

how long the water pump shaft seal will last after replacing the seal with a new one until it begins to leak again? the car is 1996 impala SS.

same for the opti spark timing cover seal?

oh, and also what about the front crank shaft seal?

thanks a lot.

If installed correctly, should last 80K+ I would imagine. That's not really in our control to determine though. It could go bad tomorrow.

Why do you ask? Did you take your timing cover off to install the crank seal? The w/p seal has a reverse lip and will leak terribly if it gets damaged.

I didn't remove the timing cover. I installed the water pump shaft seal and opti spark seal while the timing cover is on and I installed them correctly. only remaining now the front crankshaft seal to be removed. I ordered the seal puller tool from Amazon.com and I shall receive it within 3-5 days.

I was asking about how long the water pump shaft seal will last because I just wanted to know that.

you have nice knowledge in cars SS RRR.

Appreciate that, but more like know enough to get myself into trouble. The seals will last a long time if the components going through the seals are also in good standing. As mentioned, 80K is a good round about figure, if not more. I can't rightly remember because my timing cover has been off many times and I'm sure I had replaced seals at one point or another. The one issue to watch out for is the wear ring you'll get especially on the crank hub. If it is significant (can feel an indention) it can cause the seal to leak prematurely. There are sleeves you can get to put onto the crank hub, or just try and find another one which may be in better shape. From your location, I have no idea which option would be easier.

OP

the wp drive seal will last longer if you use new "O" rings on the spline shaft of both WP drive gear and WP spline. Also make sure both splines are clean, not striped as well as the inside of the splined coupler and you use new grease on both splines

if your wp drive gear spline has "wobble" in it due to worn bearings, that will shorten the life of a wp drive seal considerably. People in those cases often chose to go electric WP instead of removing the drive gear assembly itself and replacing it

To what direction I have to install the water pump gear coupler? with the o-ring toward the engine or toward the water pump? I guess toward the engine, correct?

Groove toward the engine. Make sure you have good o-rings on the shafts and use some grease.
