Default Open Headers = New Personal Best

I've always wanted to try open headers at the track but driving it there then dropping the cat back and y pipe at the track then putting it back to drive home was not worth it. So, I dropped the cat back at home loaded it on the trailer and hit the track. First run with y-pipe 10.87 DA was only 90 best one I've ever seen. I thought that sucks what a waist of time. So I made another run this time 10.85, still disappointed. Now I took the y-pipe off and ran a 10.84 a new best but still come on. Decided to hit it one more time and boom 10.78 @ 124 DA was 500ish. Now that's better. Since the car's getting faster all day I said one more time, 10.81 @124 DA climbed to 1200ish by this time. Best with full exhaust was 10.85 @123 vs. open headers 10.78 @124.

Nice Job MB! You for sure are making some good power! I wonder if you'd get any more with some collector extensions?

That is hauling the mail, nice job! I've never ran open headers at the track and wasn't sure what to expect if I did, so I was interested to see your results. Out of curiosity, did your '60 foot times suffer at all with open headers?

You picked up ET and MPH dropping the exhaust time for a better exhaust system.
This is pretty common on y-pipe cars making good power.
If you get the right system on the car the difference will be minimal.
This is a guess since you didn't mention collector or cat back pipe diameter.
Like the other member mentioned maybe a set of collector extensions for some inexpensive power as an alternative to a custom system.

My exhaust consists of Hooker LT and hooker y, single 3 inch cat back into a Borla 40474 xs muffler. You guys have me thinkin now about the extension pipes.

Sixty foot times were the same, so was 330, after that it started to move.

How long do you think extensions should be?

I would start with 12". It's where the majority end up.

Toss em on, take a crayon and make a line down em, where it stops being burnt off after a WOT pass, cut the pipe to that length.

I think 18" is a good starting point. I recently bought a set of Hooker supercomps and some 18" extensions off a guy that was parting out his drag car and he said the extensions made a noticeable difference.

Yeah man, when I opened the dumps, it usually took 3 or 4 passes for the computer to catch up. It' really opens things up, up top.

Nice runnin'!

Nice job Mystery! I had similar results when I put a cutout in the Ipipe on my old setup. Get a measurement on your collector length and add enough pipe on the extension to make total collector length 20". cut an inch off the extension each pass until the car doesnt pick up anymore. The paint trick will get you in the ball park.
