Default LT1 Trap Door

I have a 96 firebird ws6 and am looking to cut a trap door in order to replace the fuel pump. I was mainly looking for measurements/dimensions on where to cut. I have a cut off wheel to cut into the trunk and a piece of sheet metal to cover it back up for whenever I am done. Any advice is appreciated.

A few members have done write-ups, was looking for one by 95RamAirTA but couldn't find it. Here's one, also with pics from another member:

that is the thread that I used when I did mine, except I ended up cutting out a little more to have better access to the fuel lines

Don't use a cutoff wheel. Use tin snips. Much cleaner and faster.

I used a cutoff wheel for mine and it wasn't too bad. I took my time and did shallow cuts to keep the sparks to a minimum. it was a little nerve wracking, but went smoothly and I think the cut was very clean. if you are nervous about making sparks above your gas tank, use tin snips, but there is nothing wrong with a cutoff wheel

Very nice. Thanks fellas. I was thinking about using a cut off wheel but I'm not too great with it so I will be using tin snips. Did yall just use a piece of sheet metal and rivet it in for the cover up?

Oh I almost forgot. Last time I took the tank out one of the nuts that holds the sending unit on top of the tank had to be cut off, would I be able to repair the thread and put a new nut on it or would I be fine with just bolting it down as it is?

hokeyplaya05 how did you end up rolling your metal to cover up the corner where the fuel lines are? I am looking to do this myself, just don't know whether if I can do it with some vice grips or if I'm going to need special tools for it thank you.
