Default Bilstein vs kyb vs etc....

Cant decide between rear shocks for my 96z28 m6.

I want to spend the least $ and still get a good track hook up but not annoying for daily driving. Options are
-Ac delco 53010
-Qa1 economy stocker star series
-Comp eng 3 way
-Kyb agx
-Expensive bilstein's

Do all 4, get the Bilstein HDs and you'll swear it's a whole different car compared to the decarbons.

This, I bought mine and installed with new shock/strut mounts and it made the car feel different in every way. From launches to cornering they're was a huge improvement. But, Sam Sprano recommended Koni Oranges for me over bilsteins. They're pretty cheap on the WS6store.com like 359$ for all 4 if I remember correctly..

Check over at auto anything, I was able to get a set of Koni Oranges for $300 shipped, they are great shocks, I like them better than the bilsteins I put on my last bird

What budget are you trying to stick around?

For optimal budget traction at the track I would recommend a set of Strange single adjustable shocks which will run right around $300. If that was a little out of your budget you can do the Competition Engineering 3 way adjustable drag shocks and they will do pretty well for. The options are good drag options and decent on the street.

The Bilsteins, Koni STR.Ts, AC Delco, and KYB are going to be more street friendly shocks but will compromise some performance at the track.

You just need to figure out what is more important to you, drag racing or street driving.

It's a 90% street driven m6. Track maybe 2-3 times a year. I'm trying to get rid of bad wheel hop/spinning. I know some of it was driver error as was pointed out to me but I still have umi lca's and relo brackets coming. Also my lower panhard bar got bent somehow? Must have been all that LT1 torque lol. Umi panhard bar on the way too. I got non adjustable panhard bar and LCA's because I plan on keeping stock ride height.
Would the ac delco stock replacement shocks be better than my 20 year old worn out shocks in the rear and last a year or two until I can afford to go with konis or bilstein's on all four corners?

I run the bilsteins with BMR springs on my car. Great on the street but they do give something up at auto-X. The valving didn't seem to be quite optimum for the combination of fast transitions and a bumpy course so the car was bouncing a bit.

I run the QA1 stocker stars on my auto-X truck and haven't been particularly impressed with them. I can never seem to get the adjustment right for an ideal ratio or compression/rebound damping.

Anything is going to be better than 20 year old high mileage factory shocks you have on the car. With what you do, I would worry about street first and track secondly. I can sell you a pair of the rear Koni STR.T shocks and they would be less than $200 so that may be viable option for you now.

You'd be better off getting rear tires and seat time instead of throwing money around like a fool.

They are a cheap OEM replacement shock so don't expect anything more than that.

In my experience Gabriel's are very short lived making them very expensive.

I have a stock 1999 Z28 and I bought the top Gabriel's (i.e. Max-Control) and I have driven ~2000 miles and I am on my third set. Both times the suspension started bottoming out hard, and I pulled the shocks off and the driver side shock had no resistance to compression. It is obvious that Gabriel shocks can't stand up to even a stock "easy-driven" LS1. I went with Koni STR.T and they ride quite well although the paint pops off rather quickly. The STR.Ts are a good cost effective option.

Sweetbmxrider, your comments aren't helpful. I am not throwing money around like a fool. My panhard bar is bent, it needs replaced. My shocks are almost 20 years old. LCA's are a nice suspension upgrade and aren't a rip off. Get off your high horse! If anything i'm a cheap ***.

I cut a 1.5-1.6 on stock shocks up front, and cheapo three way CompE out back. Hell, I still have stock decarbons up front and cut 1.8 on street radials.

Get decent tires.

If your looking for a cheaper upgrade then KYB's aren't bad, if money isn't an option Koni's are probably the best and Bilstean is a little in between.

I went with the Bilstein HD package from the WS6 Store. They ended up sending me the SLP bilsteins that were more expensive. I didn't mind, better deal for me. I called SLP and asked them what the difference was and they said those bilsteins were valved differently than the HDs, but were similar. Either way they made a HUGE difference, probably cause the car still had the stock deCarbons with 156k on them. Then I added a set of weld-in SFCs and I love the way the car handles now. I can't speak for the other shocks, but my car is 95% street driven. I'm happy with the bilsteins.
