Default Catback or dumped bullet style muffler

So I am looking at buying a cammed 96 z28 (235/243 .602/.592 112LSA) that currently has pacesetter LT's and ORY. It just has an open Y pipe right now so it's ridiculously loud. I'm trying to decide whether to do a complete catback or just get a bullet style muffler such as the moroso spiralflow and dump it.

Obviously the dumped muffler would be much more cost effective, are there any major pros to running a full catback? I think I have the catback down to a hooker or magnaflow if I decided to go that route, unless you guys have a better suggestion in a budget application.

I will mention that i'm not really worried about DYNO numbers or losing a little bit of horsepower. I'm more concerned with the sound. I want to minimize most if not all drone, and retain a fairly quiet sound but scream at WOT.

I vote catback. IMO, the only time a muffler off the Y setup sounds good is at WOT. I have true duals with an x-pipe dumped before the axle with bullet mufflers. It's loud as hell inside the car at all times except when cruising along and I'd imagine a bullet style muffler off the Y would be even worse because it will literally be right under you.

You mentioned magnaflow as a contender. I use to have one, good sound and no drone but was a little too quiet overall for me at that time. If I recall right, with a cam it screamed pretty good at WOT tho.

having it dumped under the body will cause more drone that having the exhaust run all the way out the back, so I would vote for a catback. I had a magnaflow on my car up until this spring and liked it, as stealth said it is pretty quiet when cruising around normally then will open up once you get on it. only reason I got rid of it is because it was old and beat up, replaced it with a spintech 2OTL catback and love it even more than the magnaflow

I agree. Probably just going to get the hooker catback because we carry it at my work and I can get it for like $310.

Bullet dumped at the intermediate pipe is going to be loud. If this is a street car, put a catback exhaust on there. I ran an adjustable BORLA catback exhaust back in the day.

Thanks guys, you made the decision easy. Gonna start with the hooker catback. If it's too quiet maybe i'll add a cutout before the muffler.

My T/A has an ORY with a magnaflow catback, the thing sounds great at all RPMs up to and including WOT. No drone, no rasp, it's perfect.
