1997 camaro ss brake light issue
What's up guys hopefully someone's got some input, before somebody comments this and says check the threads there is nobody with my issue. Some similar but this is the problem.. so it's been raining for about a month and I noticed one rainy day I go to move my car and the third brake light is stuck on so I get in and tell somebody to watch me. I hit the brakes and nothing the third brake light is the only one that works. All the other lights are on they are working just they don't get brighter with the pedal. So I checked the switch power is switching with the pedal so I'm good there. I just don't know why the third brake light would be stuck on. Also I have the abs inop light but that lights been on since I've had the car. (5 years now) i really don't want to take out the steering wheel and all that. Signals work perfectly hazards the same. It's only when braking my already lit up 3rd brake light gets brighter and that's it I'm missing my actual brake lights. Hopefully somebody can help me. Thanks !
Check your grounds, use dielectric grease on all plugs, bulbs and connections. Drill small holes in your light fixtures( Low point on the bottom) Mine always leaked full, 99 Z28, during a hard rain or car washes.
I have the wiring diagram in front of me. From what your saying I can only conclude that you have two different problems. So, there are some questions that need to be asked.
Is the car/wiring stock? (93-96 tail lamp swap, LED's)
Have an aftermarket alarm or remote start?
Because racecar mods(delete cruise control)?
Have you ever replaced the brake pedal switch?
For grins and giggles did you try unplugging the brake switch to see if the third goes out? ; or "playing" with the hazard switch to see if the L&R turn on?
Just want to hear my best guess? Water has intruded the cruise control module connector and is bleeding voltage on to the brake input wire causing the third to stay lit, it can still change brightness when the pedal is pressed. While at or around the same time the turn signal/hazard switch has faltered impairing the L&R bulbs ability to illuminate.
Alright, strike that. Realized this morning the diagram can't be correct for a 1997 since the turn signal bulbs are separate from the brake/tail bulbs, where as 1996 and prior had a combination brake/turn/tail. So I can't see a need for the brake lights to run through the turn/hazard switch. Its possible the L+R bulbs are just burnt out.

Ok guys I got it figured out that night. Y'all ready ?? So the issue was I had a bad light socket on the driver brake light. Something was shorting out inside I had cleaned that thing with a dremel over and over again tried different bulbs and so what I did to figure it out was took that bulb out and hit the brakes.. everything worked. So I knew it came down to that socket but that was after un plugging the turn signals underneath the column, disconnecting the brake switch, disconnecting the abs module and taking have the back of the car apart looking for pinched wires. Needles to say I started at 10:30 figured it out by 5. Just took patience.. thank u for all your replies guys ! Hopefully this helps someone else with my particular issue haha.
Good job!
I'm going to try and get the proper diagram for 1997-up Camaro's for future reference, the Haynes manual I have on hand missed the mark.
