Canister delete / hose routing

Hi, asking for a friend here

He Just bought a 95 z28
The car does not have the charcoal canister (no regulations on our country) while changing the fuel pump assembly i know the feed and return line the other two i know one its a vent and the other one goes to the canister.. The one for the vent.. Should i leave it open or what? The one for the canister.. What to do? Just close it or leave it open to?

Im a noobie and my english is not that good, please help

You can leave it open, but you might suck some dirt into the fuel tank.

What I did it put a hose on it, looped it down and then up (like a U shape) and put a fuel filter for a lawnmower on it. Just to prevent dirt from getting in the tank.

I put the filter where the stock canister goes basically, I just zip tied it.
