Default Gen 2 LT1 350 to 383

Hello, I recenrly purchased a trans am and am looking for a strong engine setup. Is a gen 2 LT1 out of a police caprice a good option? I was thinking to have it machined to 383 with a SC. Anyone have experience with this and an opinion if this is a good option?

yes a 383 LT1 can be built, just like any other GM 350 c I SBC

The Caprice LT1 would have iron heads which stock flow better than "stock" LT1 aluminum heads...but ported aluminum heads will perform better and save at least 50 lbs of weight

The Caprice LT1 is a 2 bolt main. Not sure how much power you are looking to make but some people will tell you to look for a Y-body 4-bolt block. I have seen MANY people make REAL good numbers on a 2 bolt block. The problem is no one knows when a 2 bolt main will fail, usually other parts fail first.

Basically all I'm saying is find out how much power you plan to make because a 4-bolt will be more stable than a 2-bolt at high hp/torque levels.

I'm not trashing a 2-bolt block by any means either. Just giving you a bit more info.

many chose to convert to 4 bolt mains. Straight or splayed. The later for "power adder" motors. Machine shop can easily do this

The Vette LT1 came as a 4 bolt main block

Have you got anything done to your car now? If not, start with bolt ons and see how you like it. A full bolt on LT1 is pretty spunky, and meets the needs of most people
