Default Converting to electric water pump.

96 LT-4 Vette

Can someone help me confirm my parts list?

I have the Meziere 55gpm water pump. Does anyone know what size freeze plug fits the timing cover hole?

Also, I want to confirm I can switch over to a standard L-98 TPI style timing gear and chain set? Should only have to run a shorter dowel right?

The machine shop is balancing my rotating assembly "internal" front and back. Id like to run a better than stock damper since the OEM seems to be external balance anyways (and is worn out). What do you guys recommend?

have had a Meziere on for 20 years

I left the WP drive gear in place so IDK what size freeze plug for TC....but you could mic a WP drive seal to see

a stock damper is zero, aka neutral, balance so will work fine with a "internal" balanced motor. So a stock replacement would work....with that said I run a ATI. Get the one specific to Y body as the hub depth is different than F & B body

The SAME pump for those 20 years?!? Thats some reassuring reliability!

Thats weird, the OEM damper hub is definitely asymmetrical so I assumed it was weighted for external. So you dont have to, "clock it" at all?

I talked to ATI today and they offer an aluminum or steel damper. They are the same price so ill go aluminum and get that ordered up ASAP.

I went with the steel ATI. Stock "hub" is not asymmetrical. The "Damper" (stock) bolt pattern is so it only bolts to "hub" one way although a stock hub is not keyed so can be installed in any orientation on crank. The stock damper has one pointed spoke which, if hub was installed in factory orientation, points to 12 o'clock.

I prefer a keyed hub which you can buy and use a stock damper. ATI will have a keyed hub and while not really necessary for a stock motor is beneficial for motors that will see higher than 5500 rpm frequently

LT1 motors are "externally" balanced at the rear. The FW or flexplate are weighted but all LT1 have a "neutral" aka zero balanced damper so from a balance standpoint stock hubs and dampers can be installed in any orientation as they are not keyed

yeah I have had my Meziere on for 20 years and 90k mi without issue. Frankly it has lived as long as any mechanical pump. I bought a spare 15 years ago thinking if it ever did die I would not be able to get one at a local part store (read broke down somewhere). A EWP can be changed in 10 minutes on the side of the road. The spare has been in the trunk untouched....but at some point it will replace my original which I will send to Meziere and they rebuild them for $100 and it will then live in the trunk as the spare.

solid wiring with a relay/fuse is a must

I heard they are developing brushless versions so I figured once those come out this one will become my trunk spare.

Yeah I was planning on running heavy gauge power wires straight to the battery from a beefy relay. I'll wire in a manual override switch for the track.

Can you confirm a standard L-98 TPI Timing chain set is a bolt in? Double roller even?

...ah I would not wire direct to battery. Use a key on engine on signal wire (likely pink) to trigger the relay with the +12v coming from either the AUX post on underhood fuse block (IDK if Vette has that) or +12v from battery. You can buy a 20 amp relay/fuse combo and use 10 gauge wire for +12v side

IDK if a L-98 timing chain works or not

I don't like linking so many things together on high amperage draws. I also don't care for chassis grounds much. With a fiberglass body no less!

For normal operation yes, keyed signal to the relay. The override switch will also trigger the fans so I can cool the car with the engine off (staging lanes).

I don't think any one freeze plug will fit because it's an odd size. I've heard of people either epoxying a quarter or half dollar in place. The machine shop who built my engine cut to size/welded in an aluminum blank.

Yeah the backup plan is epoxy, I don't like welding if not 100% necessary unless it will be stress relieved after.

Default Size of freeze plug

I just did my pump and the freeze plug on the water pump side was 1 & 1/8. I used a 30mm steel disk in the cover with JB weld.
