Default T56 Leak

Can fluid leak from the skip shift solenoid? Got under to do the output shaft seal and found this plug soaking wet so fluid is coming from top to back.

Odd place for a leak, it's high on the trans and doesn't sit bathed in fluid. Could be coming from a loose/leaking shifter plate... has shifter plate been off?

It has been off a month ago to track down a vibration. Only leaks after being driven. Thought maybe the o ring was bad on it. Leak just showed up three weeks after work was done. We are dropping the tranny again late sept since we did not fix the vibration.

The CAGS noid sticks into the shifter area, and the only fluid that gets up there is slung up there by the rotation of the trans internals (it's above fluid level). The noid's O-ring is pretty beefy and when I've ever taken them apart, the noid has always been pretty snug. Since the shifter was off recently, it would make sense to leak from there. I've always cleaned them off and put some Ultra Black on the shifter plate when putting back together.

Ditto that. Don't drop the tranny before checking that.....remove the passenger's seat, pull the console, and inspect around the shifter for your leak. I use "the right stuff" when sealing my shifter to the trans.

Nope. Not the shifter plate. The CAGS is forward of it and wet. Area around plate is dry as a bone.

Are you sure it's not leaking from the shifter plate that bolts atop the trans?

Looks like oil/grime on the left side and hex part of the reverse lockout solenoid. Not sure if that follow the same path as the other pictures, but it should be resealed, IMO.

That is old dirt. The entire rim of the plate is bone dry. I am willing to bet the o ring gave after this car was in the garage all these years. Only 30,000 miles were put on it in 17 years.

Ugh, I got under there today to pull out the CAGS sensor and can see it is wet up by where the vent tube attaches to the transmission. It appears high but it is not the shifter plate. Also found motor oil pooling at the back of the oil pan.

Does anyone know if there is a gasket for this or is it RTV? Google is not very helpful

RTV - there are no gaskets in the T56. I use Permatex Ultra Black, works well.

And let it cure before driving. pretty much all the surfaces on the trans are machined extremely true so there's no need for a gasket to make up for any margin of error. Keep the bead thin so there isn't a whole lot of run-off.

I pulled that plate today and the lip was dry except for one spot. I’m torn that this was the issue or the solenoid under it. I guess we will see. Removed the solenoid and put my ICT Billet plug in anyway. O ring from solenoid seemed to be in good nick.
