Default Differences in LT1 Coils

From what I've read on here (and elsewhere), the '93-95 ignition coil is inferior to the later '96-97 coil. If that is correct, how? Is it solely a reliability thing? Is it a matter of spark energy?

Thanks

I believe they produce a stronger current.

Ok. I asked because I need to replace the coil on my '93. Since they are inferior on energy, I'll look into an aftermarket. MSD Blaster #8226 most likely since I also have an MSD 6AL-2. It's strictly track only so I'm not worried about longevity too much.

you will need to adapt the wiring connector for the later model coil and use a different coil wire

Sorry, I should've been clear. I'm not looking to convert to the later style coil. I was asking to see what the flaws were with the earlier style compared to the later style, and now an aftermarket coil for the earlier style could improve upon it. A lot of posts on the topic simply said the earlier style is inferior to the later style with no explanation as to why. Now that I know it's a spark energy thing, I can look at aftermarket coils to improve upon it. If they were just inferior due to a durability issue or something and had the same or sufficient spark energy, I wouldn't bother with aftermarket and just get an OEM replacement. That's why I was asking.
