Default 1995 LT1 Starting Issue

I have a 95 T/A and it recently decided to not start. It turns over but does not start, except for a few hiccups before dying.

I can hear the fuel pump priming and the security light is not on.

I suspected the opti, then decided to see if a rodent had built a nest by the (stock) filter. I removed the air box and couldn’t find any obstructions.

With the air box removed, it fired right up, no hesitation at all. I replaced the filter with a new one and put the air box in.

Tried it again and no joy. Same issue, it cranks strong and just sputters before dying.

I’m kind of stumped, does anyone have any idea what the issue might be?

Thanks in advance!

If it runs without the Air Box, is there an obstruction in the ducting itself? Are you unplugging the MAF when removing the airbox? Are you removing just the airbox or the entire duct work/MAF? Just a thought since that's the only thing between the new filter and the throttle body....

Good call. I removed the air box only, left the next bit of ducting and the MAF in place. I’m not sure how anything could get into the ducting before the MAF, since the air filter is in the way, but it bears checking, so thank you! I’ll post again after I have a chance to check it out.

So I removed and checked all the ducting and air box and found no obstructions, not even under the car.

This time, with that stuff removed, it didn’t start. Maybe I got lucky last time. I also saw whitish grey smoke from the MAF, which smelled like gas.

Could it be the MAF? I’m hoping so, the opti is not an expense I need right now.

Thank you for the help, I’m really not sure what’s going on at all.

Try unplugging it, do you have a scanner?

Ill try that. I don’t have a scanner for ObD1.5, just OBD II.

If that doesnt work then it may be the opti failing. Since you dont have a scanner, if you google optispark diagnosis checklist, you can diagnose it using a voltmeter. That's the only other thing I can think of. Is the coil good? ICM?

I haven’t had time to even think of the coil or icm. I’m a stay at home dad and time is just tough to make. If the maf being unplugged doesn’t do it, I’m gonna have to farm this one out.

But thank you for your help!

Hey man, your welcome! I had the same issue awhile back, and it always boils down to the basics: Fuel, Air, and Spark lol good luck man and dont give up. Unless ur like me and ditching both my T/As for a C7 hopefully [if my goals work out like I'm hoping 🤞]

Thanks man, I appreciate it. I hope your plans with the C7 go well.

I had a C4 and it was a nightmare, but that generation was pretty problematic from what I have read. Best day of owning that car was when the new owner showed up with a rollback to take it away lol.

The C7 is damn sexy and that engine! I like the C8, but for me the C7 was the pinnacle of ‘Vette design.

No good on unplugging the MAF. Gonna have a guy come over and take a look.

Yeah I was afraid of that. The only thing I can think of is that old school video on YouTube talking about the Optispark or ABITS for diagnostic testing. If it fails that test then its ur opti... Thinking about your issue this weekend, my bros car did the same thing yours is acting. Ended up being the OPTI, but do the checklist in that YouTube video first lol. Good luck!

i had the Accel on my 97 Formula, but I’d rather be done with it.

Default LT1 midyear Camshaft sprocket swap

Can anybody tell me what year they swapped camshaft sprockets from having a splined dowel pin for distributor, it was done mid year '94 or '95 but from what I've researched ordering parts and online appears '94 to me as they offer both sprockets with and w/o splined center for distributor. Have somebody putting in optispark on my '94 with cast iron heads and trying to tell me someone swapped motors, since they weren't paying attention when they changed timing gears and chain and put back camshaft sprocket with splines now having to redo it as timing cover and camshaft sprocket are different and probably trying to weasel their way out of eating the extra labor????
