It's pretty much fact that the LT1's exhaust naturally sounds better than the LS1's due to the iron block.

LT1s always sound better than LS1 cars, even Nineball willa dmit it. When I first got my Flowmaster he said it sounded better than his Formula did when thats what he had on the stock manifold.

just out of curiousity why would iron vs aluminum alone have an effect on the overall sound? the cams are completly different and the valve angle different as well. don't know stock vs stock the LSA, but i am not completely sure i can buy that based on metal used. valid point, no bashing just curious as to why.

all lt1's do sound better for that matter..its more of the orginal 350 v8 sound!

Iron and aluminum blocks have always had a different tone. Iron blocks have a deeper tone while aluminum blocks tend to have a more high pitched tone. Iron block motors growl and roar, while aluminum block motors scream.

Part of the exhaust noise comes from mechanical vibrations within the engine block, and the block material's density and elasticity affects the sound it makes. Just hold up an aluminum frying pan and hit it with a spoon to observe the gong noise. Then try the same experiment with a cast iron pan, and you'll notice a difference. That's what produces the growling roar vs. screaming noises enisguy was talking about

hey,

guys thanks for the iron vs aluminum sorting out business. it makes sense, rather common sense. john95z28... i didn't do the pot test because i have dropped a few aluminum and iron things in my day and you can tell the noise difference with out a doubt. odd and ironic that i never thought of it like that, but some of the most obvious things are certainly bypassed.

think of how many times we all jump to conclusion on are cars when it was the most simplest of things that needed to be changed out or worked on....

thanks again guys!

erik

p.s. LT1's with the spintech mufflers sound wicked at WOT! heard one a few years ago....... man sounded like i was at the strip!

No problem; glad the description helped. I was 2nd guessing myself about writing the frying pan / spoon thing afterwards, imagining that people would be scratching the non-stick coated aluminum pans with metal spoons. Then they'd get all mad at me, and the hate mail would begin. Fortunately, common sense seems to have prevailed, and no aluminum pans were harmed as a result of my Mr. Wizard post (whew!)
