Default '96 vs '95 LT1

I have what I was told is a '96 LT1. All part numbers (except timing cover) and casting numbers are consistent with a '96. It does not, however, have the crank reluctor or timing cover with crank position sensor. The engine suffix code is WHJ. The computer that came with the engine is OBD2 with code consistent with a '96. This engine is shot and needs to be replaced. Do I need a '95 or a '96? Is there any difference in the engine, itself, besides the crank position sensor? My understanding is that the crank sensor is not needed for a non stock, non EPA compliant installation. I'm thinking either year would work with the '96 computer, since all sensors are '96 and I could just ignore the crank sensor. Can anyone confirm this?

It can still be a '96. All the CPS does is if there is a dead cylinder the sensor will target which one and store it in the PCM. Timing is all done through the optispark. CPS has nothing to do with engine function and can be tuned out, so you can still have a '96. Engine wise there is no difference, either.

Thanks, SS. That's exactly the info I was looking for. When you say the CPS can be "tuned out", does the computer have to be reprogrammed, or can I simply ignore that input and not hook it up?

In order to keep the PCM from triggering a SES light you have to get into the PCM and turn it off.
