Default Harmonic Damper question

Hi everyone, I just bought a 96 WS6 w/85k and am in the process of a cam swap because the lifters wiped out a lobe. I am also trying to undo some funky things a previous owner has done - like this damper. The picture shows a rusty grooved area like a belt would go there, but the actual serpentine belt is running on a smaller pully right behind the rusty one. Does anyone recognize this setup?

it may be an underdrive pully that bolts to the stock damper, moving that out. Check belt # and compare to stock length to verify.

If you wiped a cam lobe....very likely (read it did) leave metal in motor and scored bearings. Been there and done that.

Unless this is just a throw away motor you most likely have hardened flakes of metal embedded in your piston skirts which are then damaging your cylinder walls. Can be a ticking timebomb.

Guys, I really hope you are wrong. I only drove the car about 150miles with the chirping noise, and only 2 lifters were bad, with this one being the worst, and the corresponding cam lobe. (sorry for the poor lobe photo, I dont have the cam out yet) I can't imagine there would be much metal circulating.

I plan on flushing the block and pan with oil, then get my oil tested at every oil change to see how the wear metals are doing.

When you hear a chirping noise, it’s already too late. One way you can confirm is to get a bore scope and take a peek at your cylinder walls with your pistons at BDC.
